Default Tremec 600 -5spd Toploader

I am in the process of ordering a Keith Craft 427/482 Pond Side-Oiler with Shelby Intake and Heads. The motor is going into a 427 S/C Kirkham. I believe I am going to go with the Tremec 600/5spd in a toploader configuration, but wondered if any of you had comments or thoughts. I need to make the final decision in a week or two.

The TKO600 with the .82 5th gear will be a great fit for that car.

If you'll be spending alot of time on the highway, I'd go with the 0.64. Somewhat quieter and you can go farther between fill ups. If you'll be mostly on twisted winding roads or plan to do alot of open track time, I'd go with the 0.82. I've got 3500 miles on my TKO600 and it has performed flawlessly.

I agree with Warren, I have the .64 and it makes my car a pleasure to take on the freeway.

Now, if I could only make the price of gas go down...hmmmmmm.

tremec good choice! watch cam profile vs highway use, too much cam and youll be in 4th most of the time. I have big block with dual 4 390 solid cam etc. kept the duration down with decent lift works great!perfect street car yet runs well on pump gas. 9.7 to one comp. with 235 duration at .050 and .571 lift 110 lobe seperation 3.54 rear gear 2200 rpm at 70mph with .64 good luck see you this spring!

The TKO600 with the 0.82 OD is the recommended tranny for the KIrkham with a 3.42 rear end gear ratio. Although someday I would like to investigate the fitment of one of those new Richmond 5-speeds which are made in the USA.

I should have clarified that my recommendation was based on having 3.54 rear gears. With 3.31 or taller I probably would have opted for the 0.82.

I have a 342 rear with the .64 T600 along with a fairly steep cam and will cruise at 2200 so long as traffic is steady.
I would choose the .82 with my cam the next time .

You may also want to factor in what size tires you plan on using. If your going with a 26" tire, like the billboards, or the Mickey Thompson SR tires I'd consider the .68 OD. With the 295/50/15 Yoko's and a 3.46 rear and .82 OD I find I'd like to drop the RPMs a little more on the freeway. Because of that I'm hesitant to drop down to a shorter 26" tire and make the problem worse. Just one more thing to think about

Go with the .64 gear. The .82 really doesn't do much good when your cruising on the highway. I have the .82 and wish I had the .64. you can always down shift to 4th if you need more power, but when your in .82 thats it. Go with the .64 and you'll be glad you did.

Should i regret going with the .82? I am not planning on doing a ton of racing but some advised the .82 5th coupled with the 3.46 ratio was a good combination and if you had the old style SPF rear end (3.73???) the .64 would be preferred. Am i going to regret my choice?

Just my humble opinion, but I wouldn't own the 0.64 overdrive. It drops the RPMs too far.

With your set up you will be very close to 2500 RPMs at 75 MPH. I can't see a reason to run a 0.64 unless you are trying to pass CAFE requirements. With a 0.64 you will be under 2000 RPMs at 75 mph and run the risk of blowing up your motor if you lug it while trying to pass someone.

Also, a 0.64 will be completely useless on the track. You might be surprised at how many people now track their cars. It is incredible fun. You might say you don't need 5th on the track...I would say, come and try Miller Motorsports track and red-line your motor in 4th (Oh, what a feeling), and then grin as you grab 5th and keep winding.

Or 3.27 rear gears. That's my set-up and it's great. Either way, DEFINATELY get the .82 5th gear.
