Get the 0.64 and 3.77 rear end! You won't use the 5 fifth gear until on the highway doing about 70 mph...

iwantacobra427,

The only problem with a 3.77 gear is you won't be using 1st gear either. At that point, you might as well have a 4 speed.

3.08 is too long for me. I have taken our cars with 3.42's to 165 mph at Miller Motorsports Track and it was still pulling. That is fast enough for me--maybe too fast.

Understood re your comments and the value of this forum. Juxtaposing your comments and experience (how many of these have you put together/driven?!) with the other suggestions on this board, there seemed to be at least some consensus re your comments.....

I just finished test drive of my era with tko 600 082 5th &3.31.Its perfect.I had the .64 & it was ok on the freeway @ 75mph +. only had 1800 mi on .64 when I decided I needed the .82 .engine is 427 with 4.125 stroke.cam lobe center 111.3,duration 235.5 net lift .58033, 830hp carb.looks like it will run about 2250 @ 70.

I'll report back on whether I have trouble using 1st gear or not... I'm not going to be driving in daily LA type traffic! I'm in West Texas with a speed limit of 75 - 80 mph... The original cars could be optioned with the 3.77. Gears 1 thru 4 are similar to the Toploader so I don't see a problem...

You also might want to consider the new Richmond Gear "super street" 5-speed with a 2.89 first and 0.77 fifth. Rated at 600 ft-lbs of torque. Might provide a better compromise for both track and street use.

True and False. Original cars, intended for comp cars, came with 3.77's. No original cars came with wide ratio toploaders, which is similar to TKO600, all the original cars came with close ratio toploaders. There is a difference.

Since everything depends on how you drive and where you drive ....I'm surprised there are such strong opinions for which is the better ratio transmission.

If you have a cam with a ton of duration it may be better to keep to wound up on the highway but then your mileage will be in the toilet not to mention the extra stress on your engine.

If you use the calculators here is what you get:3.55:1 gearing / 26" Tire

.82 @ 75 mph - 2800 rpm
.64 @ 75 mph - 2200 rpm

I'd run the numbers for how your going to drive the car and go with what works best.

This is the first I'm hearing about this transmission. Where can I learn more? Internal or external shifter? How's it shift, smooth? Any info is appreciated.

Just went and Googled it - damn, $3100.00 at Jegs. I think I'll stick with a Tremec TKO600 when I get mine.

After loking at Richmonds site, their new "street" 5 speed is geared similar to the TKO600, a wide ratio 4 speed with an overdrive. No advantage from a gear ratio aspect. It does have external linkage like their other trannies. Their standard 5-speed still has the best ratio spread of any "cheaper" 5 speeds.

767- Look also at G-Force T-5. Less weight, better shifting, less drivetrain power loss. Costs the same as a TKO-600.

Sorry. I just saw Richmond's add for it in a magazine and checked out the specs on their site. Didn't bother to check the price! I'll be keeping my TKO600 also since I have no complaints about it.
