Default Tranny Line

There's a line running from the back of the tranny (TKO 600) that goes forward then up.

It looks like it runs into the dash area. I am assuming that this is either for oil pressure or oil temp.

It is attached to the back of the tranny by a small bracket secured with a 3/8 bolt.

In checking over the car after a run yesterday, I noticed a small amount of seepage traced back to the top of the line that is resulting in drops accumulating at the bottom of that line.

I tightened the 3/8 bolt a few turns and could have kept going except I was concerned that I would bend the small bracket assembly.

The end of the line that attaches to the tranny bracket has a piece of metal crimping. Either crimping is bad or the bracket needed some tightening.

I'll keep watching but until then...

My questions are:

1...What is this line?

2...How tight can this bracket be secured?

3...If I have to replace the line is there anything I should know to prevent a disaster?

Thanks for your input,
Ivan

If the fluid is leaking from the top to the bottom I would be looking at where the top of the line goes to. Also look around the engine for leaks that might be running down that line. JMHO

Mudflap is right. Remove the spedo cable at the tranny. Clean or replace the o-ring. Clean the cable with brake clean or other cleaner. Reassemble with very little torque. Do not crank it down.

I'm still not certain what it is...below is a picture of the item showing the end of the tube that is leaking.
It is going into the back end of the tranny.

If it is the speedo cable, when it is removed, should I expect substantial tranny fluid loss? If so, I'll have to make sure I have a supply of the fluid plus the additive. I would guess that NAPA would have an o-ring

I appreciate the help,
Ivan

That's the speedo cable, it won't leak fluid when you pull it out it's above the fluid level. I think it's a .875 OD o-ring but I am not sure of the cross section size --- maybe .125

How long have you been working on cars?

Thanks for the speedo info...

I have the mechanical aptitude of a turnip even though I've been a surface mechanic (Ya know bolt on stuff) and wrenching on cars since a teen.

When I raced (Even though just a weekend warrior) I was a checkbook mechanic.

I always had a good crew chief and smart mechanics. All I had to do was learn the track, give good feedback and have a good time.

Now, (At 73 ) I finally woke up and am trying to learn to do more for myself. I'm finding that the small mechanical accomplishments can also be a lot of fun.

That's where this forum has been terrific for me and my steep learning curve.

Thanks again to all for your ideas.
Ivan
