Default TKO500 or TKO600 trans???

I am running a 351 Cleveland with about 450HP and ??torque. Have now a 4 spd Ford top loader. I am looking at changing to either a TKO500 or a TKO 600. Does anyone know the difference in life-span with these approximate power readings? We drive mostly on the road and an occasionly slalom. No stop light Grand Prix starts or racing involved. I love to drive it but I do not beat it up. I just blow off smart-assed Mustangs! I only ask because I only want to do this changeover ONCE!!
Also, do either of these trannies have external or internal clutch hydralics?
Thanks for any opinions. Please answer here or privately.

The TKO 500 will last you a life time. More than enough trannie for the type of driving you do. IMHO

Bob,
Either one will last you, the only difference I have seen is the 500 has a 3:27 1st gear which will probably be usless unless you have really high gears in your rear like 280 or less. The 600 has a 2:87 1st.

Smile trannie????

I have small rear tires (25") so I had to go with the 600 with the 2.87 first gear. Now I can do 30 mph in first gear. It would have been cheaper to buy tires and rims.
What size tires do you have and rear end ratio? You need to consider first gear speed and four/fifth gear cruising speed/rpm. Look at everything and pick the best compromise for you.

Here is a car math site to help.

The cost difference between the two is nil. I went with the 600.

I agree. There's not much price difference at all. I'd go big.

If I remember right the 500 was rated up to 550HP and the 600 was somewhere around 700-750. My motor was rated around 530hp so it seemed like it was getting to the high end of the 500 but would be ok. I ended up going with the 600. The cost was only slightly more and seemed like a safer bet in the long run. I don't know if that helps, but safer then sorry.

You need to access the charts and do the calcs. My guess would be the TKO500 since you have a 3.27 rear end. If I get a chance I will run them and post

Smile do the math

Here is a site to help do the cals. Remember you need to stay in the 2000 rpm range to cruise at 45 mph and 70 mph. Unless you have a lot of torque under 2000 prms. You can use 4 th when cruising 45 - 50 mph and 5 th when your doing 70 - 80 mph.

I saw that you're running a 3.27 rear.

Which toploader do you currently have, the close or wide ratio?

What is it that you hope to gain by switching to a TKO ?

Default TKO500 or TKO600

Anthony,
I need an overdrive gear, and I really am not a big fan of top loaders, especially with Hurst shifters.

The TKO 600 has much better gear ratios than the 500 as stated in an earlier reply. From your specs, I would not go with the TKO 500. Your 3.27 with small tires makes the TKO 600 the best choice. There is no difference in the life span of one over the other that I know of. Take the TKO600 with the .65 overdrive gear and you'll be very happy.

With your rear gear ratio I would go with the TKO600RR that will give you the best of both worlds. You will have a very responsive transmission going through gears 1-4 and the overdrive ratio of .82 will allow you to drop the rpms and a lower speed around 55-60mph. jimig@standardtransmission.com

I agree with Jimi. I have 3.27 rear gears with the TKO600RR. It is the best of both worlds. Usable 1st AND 5th gears.

Aside from the gear ratios, from a strength perspective, isn't the only difference between the two, the input shaft?

Default I agree too

I agree with Jimi and JWD. I have 26" tires and 3.21 rear gear and the TKO600RR (with .82 OD) is perfect. My first gear is much more usable because the car launches well and I do not have to shift into second so quickly. The .82 OD works much better than the previous 3550 with the .64 OD; my engine stays at 2500 to 2700 at 70 MPH. Previously, the engine's RPM was too low about 1800 RPM. I switched from a Tremec 3550 to the TKO600RR. I purchased the transmission and advice from Jimi at Standard.

You purchased the transmission, the advice is always free. Glad to see it all worked out well for you, there is nothing more frustrating then a transmission not doing what you want it to do.
