Default Ford Shifter - are you using a lower boot?

For those of you that are using a Toploader and an original Ford shifter in your Cobra, does your car have the lower boot protecting the shifter mechanism?

I was reading a Mustang Monthly article on detailing Toploaders and was suprised to see that Fords in the 60's came with a rubber boot that covered the shifter mechanism below the console/floor. I have worked on a lot of 60's Mustangs, and I have never seen a lower boot. Either they didn't last long, or they must have been tossed by the first mechanic to play with the shifter.

Anyone know where to get one? Are they reproduced? Are they necessary in a Cobra with the tranny sitting so far above the frame?

Doug,

I bought a brand new Galaxie in 1965 with the 4 speed and it had a rubber boot/cover over the shifting mechanism but it started tearing and fell apart pretty quickly. When I took it in for the first checkup they took what was left off and threw it away. I never had any problem with the shifting and I kept that car for 4 years.

Ron

On a semi-related topic- does anyone use a rubber clutch fork boot to keep debris out of the bellhousing? I've seen them on ebay. I never had one on any of the old Shelbys I had.

I do have a bottom boot on my car. I find that a lot of air comes up from the gearlever if you don't. It's more of a problem when the tops up.

I do use the clutch fork boot. It helps keep out water if you are out in the rain.
