Default T5 or T45?

I want to change rear gears from a 3.08 to a 3.55, but my mechanic said my T5 first gear would be useless, like a granny low. He recommends a T45. I have never heard of a T45.

Anybody use a T45? What were they installed in, from the factory?

They were used in a lot of modular engine Mustangs....'96-up I think up until they started using T-56's and other Tremecs.

Unless you're running a 4.6L, I don't know what kind of luck you're gonna have as the bellhousing is part of the transmission.

I run 4.10's in my mustang with a t5 and I have 1st gear. You should be fine. I'm in 2nd most of the time because 1st is traction limited and runs out of space up top pretty quick, but it's not like you drive around in 1st gear.

3.73's in Mustangs behind T5's is a very common option so you'd be OK. You would see a 15% RPM increase at given indicated speeds. So if you are turning 2000 RPM at 60, and went to the 3.55 you'd see 2300 revs which isn't that bad. And it would be a VERY noticable off-the-line feel improvement!
The T45 is for the modular motors (4.6, 5.4 etc...) and has the long input shaft and the mod bellhousing so write that one off. If it were me, i'd go to 3.73's. Just do the math and see where you are comfortable. A 3.73 would give you a 21% RPM increase (3.73/3.08=1.21); so back to 2000 @ 60 would become 2420 @ 60 with 3.73's. And with a .63 overdrive, you'd still have great cruising with a functional 2.35 rear gear! One thing all this DOES assume is that you have a V8 T5. Some of the oddball T5's had VERY low 1st gears, but these were mostly 4 cylinder transmissions. After you change gears, just be careful the first time you put your foot into it......

Keep the T5, have the first gear changed from a 3.35 to a 2.95, and go with the 3.55's and you'll be fine.

I totally agree with the mechanic, 1st gear will be to low in my opinion. You didn't say what car your running this combo in, but replicas are WAY lighter than Mustangs. Lighter weight needs a higer gear. As has been mentioned, 1st will be all but useless except for 'tire frying'.

Three Peaks has a great idea, change the 1st ratio. 2.95 is good, I'd consider a 2.78 as well, something in that range.

I would go with the 2.95 first gear, that way you will also get the new Z rated gear set to go along with it and a higher torque rating of 330ft lbs. jimig@standardtransmission.com

Yeah, You can get the 2.95 first gear in the T5 Superduty T5Z. There isn't really any higher first gear out there than that anyway. It is only the generic T5s that have the 3.25 first gear.

The 2.95 1st gear is found in the m7003z motorsport trans, still out there.

Thanks, guys, for the input. My question is for my Cobra replica with a 400+/- horse 351W, the before-mentioned T5, and the 3.08 gears in my 8.8 rear end.

I will probably get the T5 rebuilt, and maybe the 3.55 gearset while it's in the shop.

I will keep you posted, and Thanks again for the help.
