Default McLoed Hyd bearing problem...

Anyone else run into this?

When attempting to mount the bearing (bolt on) I found that the base of the hydraulic bearing would not seat After measuring the original Tremec retainer and the input bearing diameters are 3.350".

The Mcloed base is cut to 3.345"...

Called Mcloed and of course they've never heard of a fitment problem. (I doubt Tremec changed the input bearing size) However the person I talked to could not tell me what it's supposed measure. They did say I could send the bearing in and they'd "try to match one up" what ever that means.

Just curious if anyone else has seen this. If I had known about it at the time I would have bought the Kirkham setup, since the Mcloed seems to have quality issues.

I just installed mine about a week ago and didn't have any fitment issues.

It was a little disconcerting that the part came with an extra set of seals, though...

I have yet to bleed it and test it out.

Wish me luck.

By the way, I believe the "Kirkham setup" was designed by Mike Fortes (www.fortesparts.com). He's a good resource if you need some help.

I used the Mcleod setup on my toploader with my kirkham, and haven't had a fitment issue. It has gone soft, however, and when bled, spit up a cloudy mixture of fluid and fine black bits...probably rubber. After bleeding, it seemed to get better, but has had me worried.

i have the same setup. mcleod throw-out and a tko 600. no fitment problems,............but.................sometimes with the free play, i get a little churp from throw-out just bearly kissing the fingers of the pressure plate. so everynow and then my car will churp below 1800 rpm. bruce at modern driveline in idaho, where i bought my setup said no worries. besides its a track car. rpms usually between 3000-6500. just sweet motormusic.

Thanks for the replies, I'm questioning the use of this thing at this point since it's not an easy item to replace if trouble cropps up and transmission pulls are getting more challenging for my old, fat butt.

20 years ago the thought of throwing away $400 bucks to avoid pulling a trannie would have been unthinkable, but now...

Well you know, now I consider waking up an accomplishment.

If you have the room for a traditional slave/fork/bearing setup, why would you even think about using a hydraulic TOB?

I bought a Quartermaster HTO bearing and had to machine the input shaft bearing retainer to fit the QuarterMaster HTO bearing, cost $40 at the local machine shop...Mac

Ya Patrick, it's got pros and cons the big plus was that it greatly reduces the number of components involved which sounds great when applying the KISS principle.

The cons are that a leak can potentially cause disk contamination, it's difficult to replace and a fork gives you some additional "feel" adjustment. Although forks can also induce deflection into the mix.

I was on the fence about this being the right way to go and the sloppy machining seems like a bad omen. But I've seen plenty of external slave issues mentioned here as well.

External slave issues, however, are....external.

Throw the sumb!tch away...far away. Went through two, and I have been given credit by David K. for personally stopping them from trying to make their own internal throw-out to fix the McLeod issues when he asked me to try it out for them a year or so ago. I loudly declined and assplained why.

Yes, there are other brands out there. They all have one thing in common...they are internal.

It's like the difference between men and women...the both have the ability to have orgasms, but only one can take things readily in hand, thereby making it superior despite what our wives might argue.

You are most welcome.

Just for our 2 cents here.

We had nothing but problems with the McLeod throw out bearing. I am pretty sure that milky fluid is your rubber seal disintegrating. I have seen it time and time again.

That is why we made the external set up we did.

You didn't let me finish!

We even put a Tilton unit in the billet chassis and threw in the towel on that one too. The clutch was a bear trap. So, we custom made an external unit for that car too.

Personally, I'd give that thing the float test in the nearest body of very deep water.

It's on the way. Good news: Kirkham now takes, brace yourselves, credit cards!

Dave and Tom welcome to the wonderfull world of getting robbed by card processors.

Now I really feel like an idiot as the Kirkham setup was a little less than I paid for the McClown bearing. Oh well guess I can use it as a dent jack, the way I drive I'll probably need it.
