It's been many years since I went into this and the info may be outdated. I think that the pressure plate dictates the throw out, but not the clutch. The Long style uses the weight on the arms to increase pressure as the rpm goes up, that's why diaghragm clutches need less pedal effort. I think that overall, it is a manufacturer preference, much like tranny design itself. That's about all I can contribute, someone with more current info may be able to add more. I do recall many years ago, that an improperly adjusted diaghragm equipped car could over center causing the pedal to stick to the floor....pretty nerve racking in the middle of a 7000 rpm power shift. If I recall correctly, the Borg & Beck are similar to the Long, but use a different style arm to release the plate. I've always used Long style until the Coupe, it has a diaghragm.
