Default speedo gear in toploader

I'm having my toploader rebuilt and what we found in the disassembly was the speedo gear (nylon) was installed with the gear teeth in the oposite direction of the main speedo drive gear (also nylon). It had worn it's thread pattern into the larger gear. I'm not sure my terminology is correct so bear with me. Now the mechanic has ordered a new set, and I'm wondering does the direction of the gear teeth affect the function on the reverse speedometer?

I know some TL's have the speedo outlet on the driver side and some on the passeger side and possibly some yoyo replaced the speedo gear with the wrong part being left hand or right hand. Or do the speedo cables all rotate the same and it's the rev. speedometer that makes the change in rotation? My gear outlet is on the passenger side of the trans case. Thanks for your replies.

John

The Galaxie 4 speed, the 3 speed transmissions and autos used the same speedo drives. If you put the gears from the Galaxie transmission into the other 4 speed boxes (like a Mustang) it will turn the speedo cable backwards. You can also put the 4 speed speedo gears into a Tremec TKO transmission to reverse the direction of the speedo cable...
