Moving Back to NJ: Registration Fun
Hey Guys:
Back in 2008 I moved to Atlanta in mid-build. I finished the car and I got it registered/licensed here in Atlanta as a 1965 Ford Cobra (or something like that). HOWEVER....Georgia does not give titles for cars over a certain age. As a result, all I have now is a registration card and a license plate. Any ideas if this is going to be an issue without title?
Thank You,
Khan

If you can show date of original title in Georgia, along with a copy of your old Georgia drivers license you should be fine.

That is just the thing. The car never had a title. I finished the build in Atlanta and no titles are issued on cars registered that are over 25 years old. So in this case I have a car legal in GA but with no title due to state protocol. I also have a 1974 Pantera which also is registered but no title for same reason. Thoughts?

If the car is legally registered in GA as a 1965, and GA only issues registrations for 1965 model years, then I think what Bill meant was to take your GA registration down to NJ DMV and you should be able to use that to get a NJ title.

The trick is that you need to show multiple year registrations or insurance paperwork so prove the car was not "just washed" through Georgia (AKA: Titled Unlimited fiasco). Proof of residency (do all paperwork the same day) goes a long way to keeping the hounds from digging deeper in to your car.

Thanks guys. I'll have between 1.5-2 years of registration for both before I move. Hopefully that covers it.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Hey Guys:
I have finished my move and I am back in NJ. I am going in two weeks to register my cars without titles. I have ID'ed most of the process but will end on a question for you guys:
1.) I need to submit a notirized letter saying I am bringing in a car from out of state without a title listing vin, make model, etc
2.) Bring my old registration info from previous years
3.) Proof of Insurance
4.) NJ Drivers License
NOW... The choices are the following
1.) Go with normal plates and mess with the inspection process
2.) Go the historic route, submit pictures and hope they don't freak out about the side pipes and no windshield wipers but still hope to pass emissions....
Which route should I take in your opinion?

Kahn,
In NJ you can't register a replica car for historic plates. If it is a replica, it must go the standard plate route. Many of us in NJ are waiting for our politicians to get off their butts and vote on a bill allowing replicas to be in the Hot Rod classification and hence Hot Rod plates. This would then ease the registration process especially for newly built replicas which are currently a nightmare to register, but that’s another story......
As to inspection of that vehicle, one of your local repair shops that are a NJDMV authorized inspection centers is the way to go..Especially one that is into old cars.
Good Luck !!!

Thanks for the feedback. My car is registered as a 1965 Ford Roadster in GA for 3 years. Still think historic is wrong choice?

My advice is to get the title first (stop in the local office and do all your out of state title swaps the same day), then when the physical title comes in the mail, go back and register the car. Again, I do not suggest going the historic route, as that requires a scrutinization from the special titles/registration division on State street in Trenton. When they catch your deception, they will revoke your title, and make you jump through hoops as if you were titling the car for the very first time. Staying under the radar is the only way to go these days if you want to keep it simple.

I thought that might be a risk. If I go the regular route, I will have to submit the car to both an inspection and emissions right?

Khan

Emissions only in NJ at this time. Any number of local garages will be more than happy to inspect (and pass) the car........I've got friends in Maywood should you run into any problems.............
