Default Where can I get a good Paint Job in NJ

Hi Guys,

I have been on the club cobra web site for months but it took me until tonight to find the Tri State Association Forum. Better late then never.

I live in Bridgewater NJ (west Jersey) Does anyone know of any good body shops to have my cobra painted. Right now I have the gray primer look.

Thanks for your help. I am sure I will be talking to you soon.

Jim

How much are you looking to spend?

That may have a lot to do with where you end up going.

I have to admit I am out of the loop when it comes to paint jobs and prices. Would $2000 be respectable??? I am in no rush so if I need to I will save some more nickels and dimes, I will.

I am not looking for a paint job to win any contests nor am I looking for the $199.00 special. I just want a quality blue paint job.

Thanks

Jim: I can recommend someone in LI N.Y. about 1 1/2 hours from here. They do alot of work for HRE, a Shelby dealer. They do excellent work. They painted my car. Your more than welcome to come over and check out their work. I live real close to you. EMail me and I can give you the info. $2000.00 may be alittle low though.

I will check with a good friend of mine who had his GT40 painted locally.

Default Another idea

Jim,
Sign up for a night school course in body and fender at the Somerset Co. Voc. & Tech. school right here in B'Water. Learn how to paint ,then go buy a good compressor and spray outfit and do your own painting. I will even let you practice on my car till you get it right.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I thought about taking a class but bodywork is not my specialty. I think I would rather leave it to the pros.

Did you get it painted yet? If not try Nostalgia Motors in Boonton. They are a full service restoration shop with a great spray booth and experienced guys. The ERA site says it should be $3,ooo to $4,ooo for a very nice paint job and $5,ooo for an amazing show quality paint job.

Nostalgia Motors restored my CJ5. They do beautiful work.

Ho, ho. $5,000 for an "amazing show quality paint job"? right - good luck. IF you want the body REASONABLY straight, and IF you want the paint flat, you better START at around $4000. On the other hand, if those little ripples and waves really don't bother you, $3000 will get you covered. However, if you want something to be proud of, something that'll really look right, something the paint lays flat on, budget $5000 and you won't be disappointed. You want that "amazing show.....etc" work? - bring your checkbook, 'cause $7500 might get you there.

Teh key, boys, is preparation, i.e., bodywork. that's time - and time is $. Lots of it.

From the ERA web site:

We do have a very reliable sub-contractor (Tony's Auto Builders - 413-586-6557) that charges $3300 to $4000 for a near-show-quality job. $5000 will get you a show quality job that will stop traffic.

It's a short ride up to Conn. for you - suggest you take them up on that work.

jams:
RacerX #99 is correct. Somerset County Votech is a good operation. I took the two year autobody night course back in 89/90 instructor was Ray Essler. Was a good course. You were permitted to bring projects into the class to work on. My son totaled his "83 Monte Carlo.which became my project. I kept the salvage and fixed the car which involved installing a whole front clip (sheet metal) then preped the whole car and painted it. They had a great downdraft spray booth with heat.(boy did that dry it nice). Supplied my own paint from Auto supplier in Somerville. Did the whole job right -- sealer primer finished with a base coat clear coat from Dupont. No summer classes but was a good experience. My ERA was painted in New Britian area at shop recommended by ERA. I would not paint a car without a booth because of the dust contamination. Overspray in a garage can be reduced by using the HVLP guns/spray systems. Good luck with your paint job. Maybe I'll see you in Somerville some friday night when I drive in for the cruise and have dinner at Mugs in Raritan
