Roger,
I would still like to do Elkhart Lake. I WILL have the 289 done for next season (who's been hearing this and for how long???) But again, we need to commit a week for a 3 day event....2 day tow each way...I still think it would be worth it.
I would also like to run either the NORTH Course or the FULL course at VIR. In the full configuration this season on the VIR website, I think they ran full 3 ot 4 times with various clubs.
Also, want to get back to more events at the Glen.
I look back on this year and we didn't do a heck of a lot.
We also need to see whats up with Rausch Creek as well as Beaver Run.
I WANT MORE...I NEED MORE!!!!
Who knows there could be a Chevernak NASCAR prepared Daytona in someones garage one day....

Being just a lowly cook(or is that kook?)Here's my view. That Elkhart trip is at the top of my list. I can shave 5-7 hrs off that trip for you guys. I have accomodations for 8-10 people in the Laurel Mts.(7-Springs Ski area)Look at the maps, factor in the time/distance. I don't know, heck ,it's only bench racing.

A NASCAR DAYTONA IN MY FUTURE????
Bruce,
Now just because some individuals say that we're just a bunch of Wannabees, doesn't mean you have to take it to heart.
Think about it....you can only design and build practically anything on four wheels.....or three or two... you ARE a total loser that just happens to make da best ribses around. I want my baby back, baby back, baby back......ribs!!!!
If you have access to accommodations near Elkhart Lake, then we SHOULD go!!!!
Same with the rest of the Crankoids....think about it....we only have the two Top Dogs fron the NERC...both the BB and SB fastest times....two MORE losers.
We gots a Crankoid that successfully produces a waxers dream Daytone (Bill Connelly) who procedds to thrash that baby within an inch of its life in its first Test 'n' Tune.
So...the real question Bruce......is when are ya gonna build me that NASCAR Daytona. I can't stop thinking about that idea since our last phone conversation....it's making me CRAZEEEEEEE!!!!

Due mostly to my lack of transportation for the Cobra (have no trailer or tow vehicle), I will run at Pocono for sure next year. I plan to borrow my father-in-laws truck and find a trailer to rent/borrow, so I can get to another track. I'd like to try VIR and/or Watkins Glen too. I know you guys have run there before, but it's all new to me. Boy, I love being a Wannabee. Every time I watch that in-car video (thanks again Terry and Cranky), I think to myself "Gee, I wish it were real".
Can't wait 'til next year. Saving $$$ as fast as I can for new go-fast parts.
Don't forget guys. Anyone who can't attend the Glen on Oct. 4-6, feel free to come to my autox groups charity event to benefit Team Jenny.
Steve
P.S. At Pocono, John, you've got to let me help cook. I love cooking.

Steve,
For some reason the October event at the Glen seems to attract the most wannabee Cobra racers. We still don't know if the one hoop rollbar will be banned by all driving schools next year. We do know that Rochester Shelby club has banned them for next year at the Glen.
The VIR event is an invitation only event but I found a way to get us "invited" the last two events. We may be doing that event next year but I think we may see some of the New England guys drop out because of the long tow. 10 hrs. from NJ.
Around Feb. we usually have our calendar filled out and we start serious planning for the trips.
Keep watching for updates.
Any firstimers who want to join in are always welcome.
RD
BTW, Wives are NOT banned from our events but you will have more fun if they stay home and guard the ranch.

I'm with Klayfish. No trailer. So Pocono is going to be the track I'll run at mostly. Maaaaybe I'll get the courage to drive it up to the Glen.

Roscoe,
Do you have a vehicle you can tow with, and perhaps rent a trailer? As I mentioned, I'm going to do lots of borrowing and begging to get my car to VIR or the Glen. I plan to do at least two days at Pocono, maybe more. By the way, who was it again that you got your radiator from? I've got to start researching where to get mine from. Gotta get the aluminum one in before any more track events.
Cranky,
I'm hoping PDA doesn't require a full roll cage or two roll hoops for next year. That'll be an added expense I'm not prepared for right now. That's why I've started kicking around the idea of trading my current Cobra in for a street legal spec racer. Who hosts the VIR event that is "invitation only"? Are there other groups/schools that run at VIR and give open track time, like PDA?
I'm glad wives aren't banned from the Club. My wife wants to attend some of the events next year. I've tried to warn her, but to no avail. Somehow, I get the feeling that after one event, she may change her mind.

Roscoe,
A V8 Explorer with a U Haul open trailer or a borrowed aluminum trailer (hello mrmustang??) will do just fine.
Steve,
The Invitation Only event was at VIR with Second Strike, they are a SPF owners group. They love us!
We run with NASA or COM at Summit Point. Check some other poists under All Racing Talk, I have listed all the track websites somewhere.
We'll ask PDA about next year and cages. I'm sure slowly many events may require more protection as Insurance premiums deem it necessary, I don't think it will be every school next year.

Klayfish,
I am expecting my Afco Racing alum radiator in house by Thursday, Friday latest.
They build a 2 row 1", 19 x 26, with -16AN fittings top and bottom, no filler cap and a npt fitting on the bottom for a petcock drain. 255.00 http://www.afcoracing.com I dealt with Frank.
By the way, we should sit down some day and exchange stories on insurance claims. I do a bit of surveillance on fraud cases. If you recall the classic NJ dept of ins fraud case with the bus company in Newark several years ago. It was shown on 20-20 and was all my film. I built the NJ dept a surveillance van but it was not ready yet at the time of the filming so they used me to do the filming.

Steve,
These are some of the reasons wives usually attend only one track event.
A. They are bored to death at the track.
B. The Johnny Mac show turns from R to X rated.
C. A car show does not exist.
D. The shopping malls are 100 miles away.
E. Cam 2 does not smell good on their new outfit.
The list goes on and on.

Roscoe,
Are those posts about your wife at the track, or....
Next time we're at a track event, we'll tell war stories about insurance fraud. I've only been in the business for 5 years, so I'm not sure if I know the case you're refering to off the top of my head. But I'm sure I saw the video, in all the training seminars I've attended. Sadly, those big cases tend to be few and far between. Most of what I investigate is rate evasion (writing a policy in the 'burbs, but actually live in the city), unlisted drivers, low impact injuries and lots and lots of thefts.
The parent company I work for writes insurance under several different companies (just like GM has Chevy, Pontiac.....). Each company used to have it's own claims dept. and investigators. That has now changed, and we have merged. I will be handling claims investigations for all companies, including Great American Specialty auto. Since my bosses know about my interest in classic cars, I volunteered to become a "specialist" in investigating classic car claims for Great American. We are one of the companies who will still insure Cobras. So there is a good chance that I will be responsible for investigating any fraud claims involving them.
As for the wife coming to the track. She came with me to Pocono when I ran there in August. But I was alone. She left early, I think she was kind of getting bored. I have to admit she actually does like cars and was having a good time checking them out. But the sitting between runs bored her. When I first brought up travelling to VIR or the Glen, I got that look. You know. Actually, her first response was "How much is this going to cost us ?" But after further discussion (read begging), she agreed to go. But in exchange, I'll probably have to turn the trip into a mini-vacation for us.
Cranky, your list is right on. You must be experienced at that. I would have even chose the complaints in that same exact order (although I've heard if John has some early drinks, we might want to flip A and B).
Steve

Klayfish and Roscoe
I have seen fellow Crankoid Hank D. tow his FFR on what looked like a heavy equipment type trailer (heavy weight too) with a 6 cylinder minivan. I used to rent an open trailer from a friend for $35 per on a regular basis, and he appreciated the fact it came back better than it usually left. I bought an old Chevy van for $1800, and it worked fine, with a little mechanical input. A new dual axle open trailer shouldn't be more than $17-1800, and a used one not more than $1000-1200, especially this time of year. If you could have seen my rig (called it the 60's experience), you would have sh*t, but I got to the track and ran like hell. With an open trailer, the van is better, as it gave me a dry place to put all the "stuff" you want to bring, and a place to sleep if it craps out on the road. So, no excuses-no whining, just get on with it and get there.
McFEz

BTW you VIR guys, got it mostly figured out and should be able to run with the medium dogs next time, no excuses.

427,
Believe me, there are no excuses and no whining. As is well known, I whined and nearly backed out of my first track event, but now that I've got a taste for it, I'm hooked. I'm doing everything I can to make sure I get to travel with the Cobra next year. Like I said, I've already got permission to use my father-in-laws new Chevy 2500 pickup, and I'll either borrow or rent a trailer.
I've considered the plan you outlined. But two problems. Not excuses, just reality. First, the wife would be very unhappy with some beater tow vehicle in the driveway. And a very unhappy wife is a bad thing. Second, that's at least a $3000 outlay, which I just don't have. Along those lines, I'm probably only going to be able to afford 4 or 5 open track events next season anyway, of which 3 or 4 will be at Pocono (which I drive to). So, at this point, it wouldn't make sense for me to buy that stuff for just one or two travel days. Maybe in a few years that will change.
But for now, I'll be happy with what I have, and am very much looking forward to running at VIR or the Glen next year, no matter how I get there. Or maybe Lime Rock. I'll be looking for input of Club Cranky on which track is a good next step from Pocono. Maybe next year I can talk some of the Club into coming to a lowly autox with me.
Steve

So you got the tow vehicle, and a pit crew (the wife and her Dad). Seriously, look around for a used open trailer. This is the time to buy. Lots of circle track guys are selling their enclosed trailers, and the open trailer guys are looking to move up. So a good market for you. $1000 should get a real nice one, $800 for one that needs some work. And Cranky has room for you to park it for the winter, he told me himself LOL.
Been there

hey john,
i just got my new exhaust installed on the racecar. we cut out the existing straight pipe out the passenger side and put in a straight exhaust out the back with a borla race muffler in it. i should now be able to run the car anywhere anytime without noise restraints. that pretty much means one thing. no more excuses and i will be running with the club next year.
about trailers. anyone looking need only look at ebay. there are plenty of one car open trailers available. considering new with electric brakes are $2000 or $1500 if you pick one up at a mfr in pennsylvania in season, this time of year you could probably get them for a few hundred dollars less. the used ones on ebay are barely touching $1000 these days.
renting a truck is easy. go to orbitz.com and put in the city you live, the dates, and that you want an SUV. you will find tons of rentals at ridiculous prices in your neighborhood (or at the very least near an airport where you live). and then you are set.
the only problem i could imagine is that any rental truck will not have a brake bias controller installed. i am sure you can figure out a way to rubegoldberg one for any time you go to the track. trailer hitches are fairly easy for an open trailer that weighs under 5k with a car on it. just need a class 3 i believe.
going to lime rock for the emra race on saturday. everyones welcome. i have about 5 or 6 other guys i know racing with me.
just hope it doesnt snow!!!! the forecast calls for 40 degrees, high wind and chance of snow.
