Question for NJ Owners
For those of you that have your cars registered in NJ, how do you have them registered? I was looking at DMV's website and there are 2 registration options that are exempt from inspection: historic plates and collector plates. For historic plates, the car must be at least 25 years old (and other restrictions on use), but I did not see that requirement for collector plates. Collector plates limit you to 3k miles a year, which is not a problem since most insurance companies probably will too.
How is yours registered? Have you found one method to be better than the other??

Before the NJ DMV closed the last loophole, I got my titled and registered as a vintage vehicle.........Now, with the loopholes closed, the "collectors registration" seems to be the way to go......3,000 miles per year, a small triangular inspection sticker, and biannual inspection of your mileage only (they will make sure that your odometer works when you first get it inspected).....have any other questions, feel free to email me............

Registering a Replica in NJ is about as easy and MV friendly as it comes. (The Collectable registration) This is the hard part. Where do you find any roads in NJ that don't have bumper to bumper,cell phone talking,burger eating, newspaper reading, putting on makeup, drivers in traffic? And that's just the guys.
NJ driving sure does suck.

What's wrong with Historic registration?? No need for wearing two license plates, no stated mileage restriction, still no inspection bullsh$t (read:emissions), etc. Don't you exhibit your Cobra every time you drive it? Personally, I plan on exhibiting all kinds of things once it gets warm....too cold now and they disappear.  |

I have Historic registration and two plates although the front one is hidden. Your vehicle must be 25 years old for historic plates.

According to the NJ regs, "reconstructed vehicles" ( I think that's what they're called in NJ) are titled according to the year of the engine. That's one of the reasons I chose to go with a nice old BB.
So assuming you had no problems satisfying the 25 year age requirement, which would you register as- historic or collector?

Do you know if there are age restrictions on collector registration? For instance, can a 2002 titled vehicle be registered under the collector exception??

In your opinion guys....
What's the best way for me to register a car with a 1990 motor, (not sure carb or efi) and I do not want mileage restrictions.
I want regular insurance as I'll be driving the car all over. I had last '65 Mustang with classic insurance, and the no-job no-school provisions weren't much fun.
I'd like to skip emissions or at least not have to run cats.
Run an older motor?

No age restriction for the collectors registration. I have a few friends with 1993, 1995, and 2000 Cobra "R" models (Mustangs that is) that have the collectible registration on their cars..........

In NY do you need to show gas bills etc to show residence?
Because this new bill sounds great, but I'll be leaving NY for NJ (where I'll actually have some room for the beast)

I'm sure that NO NJ Cobra owner would EVER think about reaching up behind the dashboard and disconnecting the speedo if they got too close to the 3000 mile per year limit and then drive via the tach for awhile. After all, we NJ owners are extemely honest. Slap my face for such a nasty thought.
