Guys,

Just as an FYI, you really need to put in a town for your location.....Not just NJ, or Northern, NJ......Makes it much easier for other forum members to identify with you..............

Bill S.

Sorry for not listing my town, but had a bad experience a few years back. A few too many people knew about my car (not a cobra)and where I lived, and one night the car disappeared from the garage.

So I side on the cautious. Also thanks for the trailer advice this past Monday. I am trying to find another $2K so I can buy ther Trailex.

Thanks Jim V.

Stolen cars a ultra rare occurance. Since we all use nicknames here (or most of us do), it is harder for the potential thief to find out where you live. I worry more about people following me home, than finding my address on the web............

Sorry so long to respond, but I've been away for the last week and a half and therefore, needless to say, ERA 650 is not on the road yet. Attempted to start it yesterday, but ran into some minor issues which delayed it. Now it will have to wait until next weekend.

Which color is your car? I probably saw it while I was at ERA.

Default ERA 647

ERA 647 here in Northern NJ too. Will be interested in getting together with you guys eventually. Spent the last 3 months learning how to do body work in my "spare" time and attempting to paint this thing myself. I'm now looking for a painter. I'd be driving had I spent the money for the paint job up front. Will have a 428 w/750 Holley. Motor is ready, I'm ready, car is not.

Ziggy:

Welcome to us ERA owners here in NJ. Look forward to seeing you when the car is up and running. Took a little spin in my car this evening. What a great night for a drive (not to rub it in).

Anyone in NJ go through the NJ DMV to get your title that would care to share your experience with me? Feel free to send me a private message or email if you don't want to post details here.

Let me take the liberty of forwarding to you a reply from an email I received from Jamvan on the subject of titling in NJ - it was quite thorough. Luke-44

"Legally the car needs to be titled based upon the year of the chassis. In your case 2003(?). In my case 1998. The only way NJ will allow you to have QQ plates is that if you purchase a kit car from out of state that was previously registered as a car that was 25 years old. The state will make you go thru a very extensive inspection process to get the final title.

I have heard of a couple of companies that will change the title to your car, but NJ DMV was very blunt that this is illegal. I have been learning more and more about this over the past 6
months. The most important thing is that you have very clean records as to the engine in the car.

I recommend you spend the extra money and have a 60's vintage engine put in the car especially if you plan on doing any engine modifications. NJ will test the car for emissions based upon the year of the engine block. Also, I have found a great insurance carrier for insurance, Condon & Skelly in Mapleshade, NJ. Best rates anywhere.

As to the Resistration issues, you are correct, you car get Collector status for the car in NJ, but that won't get you QQ plates. While they will exempt you from inspections, you will still need to to take the car in to have the milage verified annually. "

Hope this helps, luke-44

Luke-
Thanks for the info. Jamvan is generally correct. What I am trying to find out though is what is entailed with the "extensive inspection"? For instance, as I understand it, you are first required to submit all of your paperwork to DMV and then you must bring your car to a special inspection station to have a safety inspection. If the inspector signs off and says your car is road worthy, then the state issues you a title. I am wondering if anyone has taken their car through the DMV process and could tell me what exactly the inspectors look for when they do the safety inspection before they issue the title.

What you need to do is get an information package from DMV...try the following link for full details and mailing address. The package will arrive in about a week - it has ALL the info on the safety and inspection stuff you need. luke-44

Chaplin,

I have spoken to 3 people who have gone through the process. 2 were with Cobras (1 guy had done 2 ERA's!) and 1 person who did a Lambo kit in the late eighties. Everything in this thread appears to be accurate according to what I have heard from the folks mentioned above. Here are some additional things:

Make copies of all of your receipts and MCO. You will not get them back from the state.

For the engineering inspection (the inspection to get your title): Sidepipes without heatshields have not been an issue for the folks mentioned above. YMMV. The motor you are using must have the pollution controls installed that were required for the year of the block manufacture. The carb setup (2x4, 1x4) can only be used if it was available the year the block was manufactured. If your engine builder can not supply a document stating that block casting numbers XXXX represent engine block year XXXX, then get a Ford dealer to put the info on their letterhead. A statement from your engine builder that the motor is 40 years old and can not be traced to a specific vehicle (VIN number) will be helpful. This all seems like a lot of hoops to jump through.

I will be taking delivery of a Southern Automotive 427 next week. The motor will be in my SPF in a couple of days and then I will start the NJ titling process. I will keep the board posted.

Robert

Luke-44

As a follow-up to my message to luke-44, after transferring the title to ERA #2017 from CT to NJ (I did this in Trenton) on 7/3/03, I then had the pleasure of visiting the Special Vehicle Inspection Unit in Morristown, NJ.

This was done for the following reason.

First since my car is titled as a 1998 but has a 1967 289 Engine, I needed to get a certification from DMV as to the age of the engine block. This would certify that should the car need an emision test, it would be tested under 1967 guidelines.
Since my car was previously titled, I didn't need to go thru the complete SVI inspection. But before they would issue this emission test letter, I needed to supply VERY DETAILED verification of the engine which included a bill of sale with a VIN number. This was critical!!!!

Furthermore, they also asked that since the car was originally built 5 years ago, I had to also provide them with a re-certification letter from an authorized Ford mechanic that the engine in the car now was the same one as in 1998. All of which was provided.

While the guys at the SVI at DMV in Morristown were very detailed oriented, they were a pleasure to deal with and issued me the required engine certification emission letter on the spot.

I then went to Morristown DMV and submitted the necessary forms to get collector car status. While CC status will not get you QQ plates, it will get you a CC inspection sticker. You will still have to go to inspection, but not as a standard car. Most important, they will monitor the milage to the car which is limited to 3000 miles per year.

Should anyone need direct phone numbers to the DMV SVI unit, DMV kit car division in Trenton, let me know. I have all the numbers. and have spent many hours speaking with DMV on the issue.

Hope this helped.

jim v.
