need trailer to pick up FFR kit
Looking to rent a trailer to pick up an FFR kit this weekend (Sept 19-20). Thought we had one secured via UHaul, but after seeing their trailer, I don't think there's enough room for everything.
Does anyone know where I can rent a flatbed trailer for two days? We'd pull it behind a 4dr Dodge Dakota.
Any help would be much appreciated -- I'm not finding any rentals online.
BTW -- we're in Millburn -- just west of Newark but we can drive up to an hour away to get one.
Thanks!

I would offer you my 20 foot enclosed, but with only a Dodge Dakota to pull it with, coupled with the windy conditions expected in the new England area, I do not think that would be a good idea. As for the Uhaul trailer, many have used it coupled with their Pick up trucks, tows well, and you should have plenty of room in your short bed for the boxes. if not, you can always stuff them in to the back seat, and in to the cockpit of the car. bring lots of racheting tie downs, racers tape (aka: heavy duty duct tape), and you'll be just fine.....Worse comes to worse, grab a 20 foot box truck from Uhaul and load the car and all of the boxes right in to it for a safe and secure ride back to NJ.............

Thanks for the reply and for the thought of offering. If we don't find a better trailer, we're going to have to go with the UHaul. Problem is, we're not picking up just the FFR -- we're also getting various parts from a third party supplier up that way, including a transmission. Space will definitely be tight with all that.
I've spent all morning combing the internet for a company that rents trailers out and I've got nothing! I find it hard to believe that you can't rent one, but I guess that's the way it is.
I guess we'll find out if all those hours of playing Tetris will actually come in useful here...

A 20-24 foot Uhaul box truck will hold everything you you will need to build your car and then some. We picked up a FFR Coupe in january using another 20 footer, there was more than enough spare room for a motor, trans, rear, and more than enough room for all of the boxes...........
Bill S.
PS: if your worried about the space, get the 24 foot box truck, you could fit 2 kits inside (if you turn them sideways that it).

Thanks Jack --
Where did you rent from? We'd do that in a heartbeat.

The one way car hauler (open by the way) is not going to give you the room to stuff the boxes in, nor the room to stuff the driveline your picking up. better rethink your options, or plan to make two trips.....

ERA649 ,
I have a 20' enclosed trailer they could use, but their tow vehicle would be on "the ragged edge" for using it. Safety should be their number one concern, as the vehicles can be replaced, but their lives cannot.

Bill,
Yorr right, if you can't tow it safely, don't tow it. Call a trucker, like Intercity Lines, etc.

Delin:
I concurr with ERA649, have intercity pick it up and bring it to NJ. I will save you a lot of hassles, time and grey hair. Their price is pretty reasonable.

Do a yellow pages search and find the U-Haul in Wareham or Plymouth. I actually bought a used trailer a mile from there and stopped there to get some connectors as I started home. I believe they are on Rt. 28 around the Wareham/Plymouth line....just south of FFR.
I can't vouch for their prices, but when I bought my racecar in Lebanon, NH, I rented the trailer there for $56. If it's not raining, all the boxes and kit should fit on the car trailer. When I picked up my kit, I left the seats in the body and put everything else in an S-10 Blazer, with my wife and baby in a car seat and it all fit.
If you have a pickup, there's plenty of room in the bed for all the boxes easily. I've heard of guys using snowmobile trailers to haul the chassis/body. It might be worth it to line up buying a used snowmobile trailer and just selling it when you get home. I made $200 profit on my trailer after I was done with it.

Thanks again for all the advice. We're going to go ahead with the UHaul car carrier. We talked to FFR and they said it'd be no problem to fit everything, even with all the other stuff we have to pick up. Guess they've had quite a lot of people use these.
So it's less than 24 hrs that we'll have our kit!!!!!!!!!!

Just make sure you speak with FFR and get instructions on how to secure the trailer with U-Haul. THe local U-Haul guys in our area I know in the past has denied renting the trailer for certain uses.
As an example, when I asked the Morristown U-Haul office to rent a trailer to tow a Cobra, they indicated the car was not in theri data base and would not rent the trailer for that use. I then tried to rent the trailer stating I needed to tow another one of may cars, a TVR, they once again refused to rent it to me.
I do believe if you state it is a AC or Triumph, that should fly. But once again, check with FFR for advice. Hate to have you run into the same problem I had.

This is right u-haul really screwd me last month!!I too have a dodge dakota 4x4 with the 318 and tow package. The owners manual says I can tow 7200 lbs.I reserved the car trailer a week in advance and told them I would be towing my roush mustang, they said no problem.Well on the day I was to leave I went to pick it up and they said it was an unsafe hook up and would not rent to me.Those aholes said my truck could only tow 3750 lbs and the trailer weighs 2000#'s so the payload could only be 1750#'s.They really screwed myself up as I needed to be in michigan for a triatholon for Roush the next day!!
So we loaded up the mustang and drove her out instead of traillering.
Delin be absolutely sure u-haul will rent to you before you leave to pickup the kit.
Also I live in central Ma. so if you find yourself in a bind let me know maybe I can help out.
Maybe try taylor rental also.

Update:
Got it all back safe and sound.
The local UHaul rental place (on Rt 22) was fantastic. The manager there was super nice and only charged us for one day even though we had it for three. He was really helpful and didn't give us a minute of trouble.
The only trouble we ran into was that just before we were going to pull out, I noticed a piece of the tire tred was missing, so we called the national UHaul line to get someone out to change the tire. That was maddening -- it took them FOUR HOURS to finally get the tire changed. (Guy came out first time with the wrong size, etc. etc.) UHaul told us they'd put us up for the night but then recanted, so it turned into a festival of words...
Ultimately, we decided to head home even though we didn't pull in until 1 am.
The car rode just fine on the car carrier -- FFR put some wooden crates across the hollow part of the trailer (it had two tire treads but was hollow in the middle), we put some old tires on top of that (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, by the way), and set the chassy on top. Almost all the boxes fit in the car and in the back seat of our 4dr Dakota, leaving plenty of room for all the other stuff we had to pick up separately -- including a fuel tank and transmission.
So it ended up working out for us.
Now it's just a matter of starting on this beast...
