You know you're from NEW JERSEY if..
You know you're from NEW JERSEY if... -
You don't think of citrus when people mention "The Oranges".
You know that it's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags.
A good, quick breakfast is a hard roll with butter.
You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
You've eaten at a Diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 a.m.
You remember that the "Two Guys" were from Harrison.
You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
At last three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen and you know the town Bon Jovi is from.
You know what a "jug handle" is.
You know that WaWa is a convenience store.
You know that the state isn't all farmland.
You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey - there's "The Shore". And you don't go "to the shore" - you go "down the Shore". And when you are there, you're not "at the shore" - you are "down the Shore".
You know that "Piney" isn't referring to a tree.
Even your school cafeteria made good Italian subs. And it's a Sub, not a submarine sandwich or worse yet, a hoagy, a hero, or a grinder.
You remember the song from the Palisades Park commercials.
You know how to properly negotiate a Circle.
You knew that the last statement had to do with driving.
You know that this is the only "New..." state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (like, try...Mexico, ...York, ...Hampshire - doesn't work, does it?)
You only go to New York City for day trips, and you call it "The City".
You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.
You consider putting mayo on a corned beef sandwich a sacrilege.
You don't think "What exit" is very funny.
You know that the first "strip shopping center" in the country was on Route 22.
You know that people from 609 area code are "a little different".
You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton - that's for out-of-staters.
The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar.
You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.
You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
Every year, you had a least one kid in your class named Tony.
You know the location of every clip shown in the Sopranos opening credits.
You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of the mall.
You know that people from North Jersey go to Seaside Heights, and people from Central Jersey go to Belmar or LBI and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can be no other way!
You remember the stores Korvette's, Two Guys, Rickel's, Channel, Bamburger's and Orbach's.
You've had a Boardwalk cheese steak and vinegar fries.
You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
And finally... You've NEVER, NEVER pumped your own gas.

Why is it free to cross many bridges from PA to NJ, but there is a toll to leave NJ to come back into PA?

Steve,
You'll have to ask the PA Turnpike Authority, as they are the ones collecting the tolls.

Bill,
Stores you forgot:
Thomas Hall Stores
Grant's
Inventions you forgot:
NJ invented the Drive In, yet they are no active ones left in the state.
NJ also invented the Jersey Barrier.
Asbury Park used to be a healthy, vibrant town before it became a replica of Beirut.
When seeing Bruce Springsteen in Asbury Park was a regular occurrence and no big deal (1976).
When going to Seasdie heights on a Saturday Night meant you had to step over all the past out drunken teenagers on the boardwalk.
When you got pulled over for a DWI and the Trooper let you go and said, "Take it Easy, drive safely".

When I was 4 my Dad took me to a Grants. They had a diner inside and he bought me a hot dog. After eating it I puked it back up all over the waitress. Oh, the memories.
I know this isnt just NJ but Grants reminds me of those Green Stamps. Do you guys remember how they worked? I was too young.

Real Jersey guys can get to Seaside without going on the Parkway.
Remember when Drag Racing took place at Old Bridge Speedway
1/16 of a Mile
The Adventurer car Hop on 22 in Union.
The Leaning Tower of Piza in Green Brook. ( best Cannoli in the state)
When Don Raleigh owned Don's speed Shop
When California Speed and Sport Shop actually sold speed equipment
When the first McDonalds in Central Jersey was on Rt. 18 in East Brunswick.(1958)
Burger $.15, fries $.10 ,Shake $.20
When car guys actually were motorheads instead of Accountants and Lawyers.
You had to be there.

When you believe there is still a chance of Indian attacks west of the Ohio river, and nothing worthwhile exists west of the river.
When you cannot be understood when you speak to anyone not from NJ.
And if you are ever out of the state you wonder why others lump you into the category "easterners are rude people"

When Long Island was referred to as "The Island", Manhattan was referred to as "The City", and New Jersey was referred to as, "Joisey". If you were from New York, you were from "Noo Yoak".
The (then newly constructed) Verizzano Bridge was called the Ginny Gangplank, and only cost $.25 toll.
Jack21 grew up on Long Island, spent a few years in Texas ( I loved Texas, particularly Galveston), moved to New Jersey (Exit 10), (I loved N.J.), then to Washington DC (Northern Virginia). So? DC has averything I hated about NY, but none of the socially redeming factors. Like Long Island ( The South Bay, Jones Beach), or Joisey (Seaside Hights, Wildwood).
But, wherever this little Cobra clan of ours hangs out; fun and nostalga prevails.
My next move? Retirement in nice, quiet, peaceful, low key, Morehead City, N.C.

Geez Cranky,
I got my first speeding ticket drag racing out at the Adventure on 22. Had to be 1962 or 3.

Cranky...hahaha,
Actually we would drive past the hop going westbound and make the first U turn. You would wait for no traffic, pull out, stop and line up then mash the pedal.

I like that one most of all.
