Without question. I have been the recepient of some well exercised discretion by some very nice cops. I'll take a ticket that does not carry points any day of the week and I would do so with a smile and BIG thank you. No paperwork, no seatbelt, what ever, all better than moving violation with points.

FYI
I will suggest that most of the problems stemming from unprofessional behavior by police starts at the hiring process. Due to Home Rule, every municipality has hiring authority. This leads itself to nepotism and other unfavorable influences. But this extends to school districting as well. So good luck in trying to change this in NJ.

As for the assertion that cops should do more things like arrest drug dealers... I concur. However dont forget that car accidents kill 35k+ year in, year out. And excess speed with alcohol are probably the greatest contributing factors. Furthermore, many drug arrests start from pulling car over for motor vehicle violations. I cant tell you how many yahoos I've arrested for narcotics possession that I observed in plain view after a moving violation (and I would say that I was no more sucessfull in arrests than the average cop).

Dont forget to ask me for a PBA card!

Cheers,

Jong

Roscoe,

Good question. Whether FOP, PBA...

Couple of points:
1. If you're pulled over for speeding, the cop gets your DL/docs, goes to his/her car, comes back with a summons, and you find your FOP/PBA card -- too late. The summons is a controlled item, and once issued cannot be retracted. Clerical errors have to be explained and dismissed in court. So be sure to show the cop your card before the summons is issued.
2. In the event of a motor vehicle accident, dont even bother showing the card. Especially if you're in the wrong. I dont know any cop who would jeopardize their job just to cut you a break.
3. the FOP/PBA card is the property of the issuing organization, the cop should sent the card back to the authorizing officer describing the offense. The cop will most likely ask "do you want the summons, or should I keep the card?" -- your choice.

Finally, in the event of a non-mva traffic stop, your disposition will be a greater factor in whether or not you get a ticket, rather than the card/type of card you carry.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Jong
