Hey Cracker, loving the car and having problems is part of th process I guess. I have yet to push the car or rev hard (if I've gone over 4500rpm thus far I would be surprised. My goal here is not to push or pull at Charlie. He is clearly a man of character and has been very helpful. The fact is that the car is blowing smoke and I want to fix it. Cyl. #1 was an absolute mess and indicates past problems so I will start there. Hopefully it's a valve seal problem and not rings but I will know more later in the week after a leak down.

Josh,
He's further away, but my mechanic/builder is a 460/514 specialist. He's got a 514 in his Cobra and loves the things. He's in West Chester, Pa. He'll be joining us on July 10th for our gathering, or if you want to talk to him, I can give you his number.

Steve, I would love to get his number. Is he a full time mechanic?

Josh,
Sending you an e-mail. Yes, he is a full time mechanic. He has his own shop, attatched to his property. It is about a 4 bay garage, and is a shrine to the Cobra. He builds mostly A&C Cobras, but there are about 20 Cobras he maintains, including mine. He does work on all kinds of cars, from Accords to Ferraris, but he loves the 460/514. You should check out his car, it's scary fast.

Welcome to Cobra ownership.....

From your description it sounds like you might have a leaking or blown head gasket.

With Cobra ownership comes a learning process. The best thing I can suggest is learning how to take care of things yourself. The first thing I would do is a leakdown test and compression test.

Being dependant on an outside mechanic is expen$ive and many times disappointing. Many mechanics have no idea what the hell they are doing. I recall a local guy with a Superformance and 460. He treated it like he bought a car from a dealer, giving it out for tuning, repairs, etc. He never had the engine running correctly and eventually sold it cheap.

I strongly suggest you start learning and, oh boy!, buying tools.

Guys,
Well, I had the leak down and compression test done..thankfully, every cylinder read almost idendical to one another (whew!). The car is running fairly rich and I am going to do some spring and rod work to the Edlebrock's this weekend. My cam has so much lift that it's generating very little vacuum at idle so I need to make some adjustments. I am still getting a tad too much smoke out of the right bank (which based on the plug read is running richer than the left bank) I still may have valve seal leak but either way I need to deal with the richness issue first. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My advice is to ditch the Edlebrock carbs.......

Bill,
I was going to suggest that. Holley or Demon. You can only do so much with an Edlebrock. Basically, a mass market mediocre item.

I realize this question digresses from the stated topic but considering the technical expertise that is combing this post I figured I would get something back. I have a buddy with a '67 Vette and he asked me a question regarding his tranny (4 speed). When he pushes the car hard it get's tough to shift. Once he goes back to a "normal" driving it's fine and dandy. Any thoughts?

Josh,

In regards to the vette... When was the last time the clutch assembly was changed??? Also, when is the last time the transmission fluid was changed???? Both of these items (I did not even get into the shifter linkage issues yet) if worn, or not adjusted properly will cause the conditions in which you have described.

Bill S.

PS: Also have him check for a busted transmission or engine mount..........

Roscoe,
Why? You plannin' on stuffing that 351W into one? Talk about a track car. Light, short wheelbase, lots of power...sound familiar? So when are you hitting the track this year anyway?
