Oh, and it does nothing to assume that none of these have been sold anywhere and registered with this document ... there are 300 of them to date, so we can quit the illegal / conspiracy BS and get to the heart of the matter.

My intent as already stated is to find those who have gone through and those that currently face it to compoe some form of How-To when dealing with NYS that will be shared right here.

Perhaps you can add something here?
Most of the above is cut and dry, black and white....The rest is quite simple, in certain parts of NYS, as in certain parts of PA, you have a denser population than others. The closer you are to a major metropolitan area, the greater chance that your particular district requires emissions inspections of and and all vehicle. I do not see where you found the "Homemade vehicles or custom vehicles that are registered in the Upstate Area" on the NYS DMV web site, so I'm not sure where your going with that line, but most likely the answer is covered by my previous lines above.

I did not say you were doing anything illegal in nature, I only threw out a scenario in which you obviously took to heart, sorry, if your read it the wrong way, as that was not my intentions......As I've already stated, each district of the state of NY has it's own rules and regulations when it comes to emissions and safety inspections, some government offices are stricter in their reading of the general guidelines than others. If you follow the basics as outlined on their web site, you should have no problems in getting the car titled, registered, and insured as a 2005 "home built" or "custom" vehicle........

I do hope that you find this helpful as well. As someone who has registered homebuilts in the state of NY (Sullivan & MonroeCounties to be specific) as recently as March of 05, I am aware of how difficult it can seem, and how frustrating one could get by jumping through the hoops put forth....All I can tell you is the systems works if you go with the flow and do not rock the boat.....

Perhaps I am crazy to read this as custom or home built vehicles that are registered Upstate (through the inspection process) are exempt.

Maybe a better question is how do we get SEMA involved? Or is there a better organization that all this effort could be channeled through?

I just went through the process of re-registering my SPF after it was flagged as an "improperly registered" vehicle upon my application for transferring a vanity plate at the DMV. I realize this is a different case as it's not a new build, but may be similar to a lot of cars out there. I've recounted my experience in a separate thread in the Registration Forum, successfully getting the new NY VIN number and finally registering it as an assigned 1999 Custom.

Now, I'm concerned about the NY Inspection for my car. My safety inspection is good until May '07 as it was done under the old VIN and registration as a '66. I was told by the Technical Services Bureau people that the car's emisson standard would be that for the motor installed; in this case recognized by them to be a 1966 replacement motor. I don't see that in any of the DMV documents referenced here. When I roll into an inspection station next year or at any time with my new registration, won't they scan the bar code and then ask for an OBD II plug? Unless the bar code has something imbedded in it that would signify "exempt" status. What happened when you guys went through the inspection?

Ray,

Since the NY DMV recognizes your engine as a 1966 "replacement", it's already data coded in the system. When they read your bar-code, all of the pertinent information should pop up on their screen and you should be good to go. Relax and go enjoy your car now
