Default transporting the cobra

I know that I'm getting well ahead of myself here, but wanted to ask about how you took delivery of your car, and how you dealt with transporting the car to the NJ DMV for inspection, since you can't drive it there.

I know from doing a search, that some of you seem to borrow your trailers from someone with one; unfortunately I don't know of anyone with a trailer.

Just trying to think out what my alternatives are, as I think it would be great to pick up my car myself from ERA, rather than have it shipped. I also know that I need to work out the logistics of transporting it once it gets here, for inspection. BTW I'm in Central NJ.

I assume that you rent the trailer, but what is it that you look for in a trailer to transport the cobra, given issues such as ground clearance, etc. Does anyone know of a place in Central NJ that has trailers that are good for the Cobra?

Or am I just better off having it shipped?

As always, your thoughts are appreciated.

Ray

Ray,

Transporting your car to the inspection station is easy, come to one of the Cobra breakfasts in Chester, NJ and make mention a month in advance that you need to get your car to the inspection station. One of us will surely step up to the plate if at all possible and offer to trailer your car there.

Any decent car trailer will have a beaver tail and at least a 5 foot set of ramps. Plenty of trailer shops in NJ who will rent you one provided you have a tow vehicle that can handle it.

Ray-
I had Intercity Lines deliver my car from ERA to NJ. Wasn't that much money at the time (I think it was around $650) and saved me - and whomever I would knew who had a trailer- a lot of time and trouble. As for getting to the inspection station, I rented a U-Haul truck and trailer and towed it there with that. But if Bill or one of the other guys is willing to tow it down to the inspection station for you, even better!

By the way, has anyone told you that you're getting way ahead of yourself.

Bill, tell me more about these breakfasts in Chester. I don't know anything about them. I don't want to impose on anyone, but it would be great to learn more from you guys at more of these meets.

Chaplin, as I'm sure you have figured out by now, sometimes I like to over analyze things a bit! LOL What kind of U Haul trailer did you rent and did you have to do anything special to get the cobra on and off of the trailer? My brother has a Chevy Tahoe so I was going to borrow his vehicle for the tow.

Ray-
U- Haul has a flat open car transporter. Here is the link to the U-Haul page that has the specs on the trailer.

http://www.uhaul.com/guide/index.asp...-autotransport

I think you could tow it without a problem with a Tahoe. The only thing I did was cut some 9 ft' long 2x10s to lay on over the ramps on the trailer to make the transition from the road to the trailer more gradual so the oil cooler would not scrape on the trailer- worked like a charm.

Thanks for the tips.

Really undecided between hiring someone and going to get it myself from ERA, but will need the tips on the trailers in any case.

Chaplin, I like the idea of the 2 x 10's, and appreciate the link.

Don, when I get closer, I will get a quote from them; maybe that will help me decide.

Ray:

In 2002, I bought the Corvette from Kerbeck in Atlantic City and had also considered the alternatives. With the unknowns of February weather, open trailer, traffic, etc etc I decided to use InterCity. The current price of gas may influence the decision, but I would guess by now most of the transport companies have added a fuel surcharge.

Default When you are ready, call me

RAO-3 When you are ready, call me. I have right now a trailer for bringing the car home with a solid floor. Makes it alot easier then the u-haul thing, been there done that. I am looking to get a low hauler from Haulmark. They sell 6' trailer that are great for storing and towing cobras. The trailer is the same hieght as the Tahoe. I can pick the car up on a SAT, I have everything for a safe trip home. Cost will be tolls, gas, and a happy meal. Rick L. I have towed mine about 22,000miles, no problems. I will treat it like my own. Get a car cover from ERA also, the good one. It's a custom fit. Rick

Hi Rick, I had planned on getting the indoor car cover from them. Is that the one you are referring to? As I understand it, it's not a good idea to cover the car while on the trailer, correct?

Default transporting the cobra

Thats what im talking about. Honestly Ford nailed it with the styling on the 03 04 cobra. Nailed it.

I love 03 04 cobras. They are not the best car in the world, but the story behind it, how they made the car, just everything in general, makes me love the car

Alabama is usually on the bottom of any list published.

So I would like to take this time to tell you how we get our Cobras register in Alabama. We mail the paperwork to the state capital and in a few weeks a State Trooper calls and make an appointment to come to our house and look at the Cobra. He checks the motor and transmission numbers to see if they are stolen. He attaches the vin plate or will let you do it. It's a lot easier if you talk to him about how his yard grass is doing. I have never seen his yard but I think it's beautiful.

That's it.
I think we may be on the top of the car registration list.

Dwight

Look into getting AAA I think their plus service allows for a long toe. I used AAA to flatbed my car back home after paint.

AAA is always good to have anyway since we don't carry a spare tire.
