Default New webers-check them out of the box

I purchased a 48 IDF setup at the end of last season for my mustang bolted it on and attempted to get it running properly. Only put about 400 miles on the car but could never get it running right. Dead cylinders, fuel pressure issues ect. I knew i was going to pull the motor out and rebuild it over the winter so I did not go crazy. I am in the process of powder coating the carbs so I bought 4 gasket kits and tore them down. It is an embarrasment what these carbs looked like inside. I run a prefilter and large after filter so I know the debris did not come from me. Also, the floats were so far out of adjustment I don't know how the car ran at all. One float was actually in a locked position because both tabs were bent all the way in and the needle could not open. (dead cylinder issue) Just a heads up for new weber guys. Open them up even if they are new and clean em up.

I bought them from a distributor who gets them through Redline. I don't blame them though, they didn't build the carbs.

Supposedly, there are two versions of Weber being produced nowadays. Some from Spain and others that are being made here in the USA. I don't know which version is the better of the two.

I bought the ones from Spain, and true, the floats were not all adjusted to the same setting, but you have to adjust them anyway when you're setting them up on your specific application. Not the first time I've heard of junk in them and poor machining on them, I must've just lucked out on mine. Didn't find any debris.

Like all mass produced products, carbs are built to a price, not to a standard accepted by a enthusiast.

I've bought many carbs, Edelbrocks, Holleys, Weber IDFs, DCOEs and every one of them has been stripped and "reset" including centering throttle shafts because they bind at one end, or butterflies that give uneven transition slot/hole alignment.

My four Spanish IDFs had floats all over the place, within 2mm but still not good enough.
