8 August - crowning a WCCC champ!
I want to put some early feelers out there for another proposed driving event.
The Salt Creek Chapter of the MSSCC is holding a solo racing event at the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates on August 8th. I know that is the day after the WCCC picnic but it would be good time to blow off some steam and do some "cone racing". Lee, Sten and I had a good experience in April - but I thought we can have some fun with it and crown a "club champion" (if we can get at least five cars).
If you haven't done this before, it is very supervised and in my last solo racing event, I never went beyond second gear. All you need is a SN2005 rated helmet, cash to pay a registration fee and willingness to have a good time.
The SCC chapter lead is a phenominal driver/instructor and if we get enough interest I'll check with him in having a separate class for our cars. What do you think?

This time I cannot, since we will be in CO on vacation the first two weeks of Aug.
However, it was a great time and think anyone that has not tried it would get a blast from an autocross event. I highly endorse autocross for all members of the WCCC.

Just a follow-up since the first post. I spoke with the event lead and they would gladly host a bunch of us rowdy, noisy cars that show up for a little spirited driving. I have the application for the event - send me a response and I will get it to you. Put down the paint polishers and get these cars out for a little exercise - remember if you get out of second gear, you are either a nutcase or the second coming of Dan Gurney. Show what you got!

Tim, the picnic is on Saturday Aug. 7th, and the solo event is Sunday Aug. 8th, so a lot more Cobras should be able to make it, although they maybe a little weighted down from all the food at the picnic. Tim you are so right , these cars need the exercise, its what they're made for! Send me an application when you get a chance.

August 8 details
Attached is the info for August 8, please confirm who is coming after reviewing. I am hopeful the folks will give us our own group and a possible break on the entry fee.

OK, it looks like a 3 car championship (assuming weather cooperates) race between Fred, Sten and Slow poke (me). I still have all the scars from the last cone bashing event but what the hell - who said these things had to be shiny all the time.
Anyone else out there that think they can handle a second gear race? If you wanted more, I would have liked to seen you at Gingerman a few weeks ago for some more spirited driving.

I win!!!
Fred is out, Sten has mechanical issues, Lee is somewhere in the western mountains. I show up, I win, way too easy.

Galla4,
Not so fast, I think I may join you. Not that it will change the result, you'll still win. I've never done this before. Trying to work out the details so I can get away Sunday. Send me a PM with your cell number. Maybe we can hook up before they start the runs.

No where in my message did I say I am good. Come on out and let's put on a good show for the rest of the attendees. BTW, the contact for the event with a spec racer will kick our butts, we are only looking to see who ends up in a distant second place. All the other speak is just to get more cars out. See you Sunday!

Well there were two of the Windy City group at the event - needless to say we were the only two open top cars that still ran when the rain came. Jim and I stuck out the morning then the sun came out in the afternoon. I don't have the official results but Jim did take honors. It was fun but there were a few moments when we were saying "What the hell are we doing out here in the rain?" For the record, I did nail two cones really good!

Had plans to make it as a spectator but thought for sure the event would be canceled cause of rain. You guys deserve an award for sticking it out, rain or no rain.
And who in the hell put those two damn cones where they didn't belong anyway!!!

Great learning experience
We got soaked!!!! Great fun and learned a lot. It's not often you get to go all-out in a car with no top in heavy rain, with windshield wipers that don't really work all that well (I could hardly see the cones), with tires not designed for rain. We couldn't even look at the gas peddle to hard.
For the record, I took out a lot more than two cones, especially on the last run - when I wanted to see what I could get away with. We never really got to drive in dry pavement, just patches of dry - but that alone caused us to drop over 5 seconds. I'll have to do that again - but I think power steering would be helpful on autocross. It was a good time.
