Default New traffic laws in Illinois...

This my be of interest:
Putting the pedal to the metal will no longer result in just a speeding ticket, thanks to a new Illinois law which goes into effect January 1 that targets people driving 100 miles per hour or faster.
The new law has two important parts:
* It makes speeding in excess of 30 miles per hour a Class B Misdemeanor with a penalty of up to six months in jail and a $1,500 fine.
* It also denies court supervision for aggravated speeding. Driving over 40 miles per hour or more over the limit remains a Class A Misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a fine of $2,500.
"When you are going 40 miles above the speed limit, you fall into the category of being a potential killer," said Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.

Thanks to Ray K. for pointing this out on SCOFF...

Now if Illinois would just start enforcing the laws regarding corruption - across the board....

I am not liking where this is going, all it's going to do is drive up costs on both sides of the equation.

I think it's great. There is absolutely no excuse for going 30-40 over the speed limit. The same for drunk driving. Doing either just says that you don't give a sh1t about anybody else on the road. With over 30 years on the FD, I've seen many killed or seriously injured because of DUI and/or reckless speeding. I have zero tolerance for either.

Not on a public street where innocent people could be hurt. If you want to go fast, take it to the track.

I got one about 25 years ago. 5 MPH over on a highway in Ca. and I was the slowest car. I was told later that county only writes out of state plates because they know you won't contest the ticket. Other than that one, clean record. I got pulled over by the state patrol once but it was only for him to check out my car.

I also agree with jwd. If you want to speed to that excess, take it to the race track. As a retired insurance adjuster, I have also seen to many fatalities and serious cripling injuries due to this behavior. Why people seem to think this is acceptable is beyond me. Until they are directly impacted by this situation, their opinion doesn't seem to change. Thats my 2 cents worth. Wishing everyone a safe and Happy New Year.

Pretty easy if you're going 60 to step on it and almost before you know it you're going 100. Just be careful where you do it.

This reeks of State government's way of generating more revenue via higher tickets fines since Gov. Quinn's (not the Mighty either) idea of raising the state income tax level from 3% to 4.5% (50% increase!) got such terrible press in the media. Seriously, I'm all for taking crazy drivers off our roads but there are more important problems here in the Land of Lincoln that should be dealt with first.

We have the three worst speed traps in the USA all within 15 miles of my house in central N. Fla- Waldo, Hampton and Lawty. They'll write you a ticket for blinking your eyes. Even worse if you have out of state tags

We've had our new "street racing law" for awhile in Ontario. 50 km over and you get a roadside licence suspension and they impound your ride. Problem is its almost impossible to get your day in court. Don't light the tires or lift the front tire on your bike or you'll be charged with stunting. Some in government where looking into laws limiting any modification of any kind. Out west they've passed loud pipe laws,,,, wonderful Anyway have a happy new year to you and yours!

Yep, the state and the lawyers (who represent you for a plea deal) make out, you lose.

The last ticket I "earned" was in 1974 in.....(you guessed it...) Waldo.
The cop was very nice but insisted I look at his (brand new) VASCAR device. Boy was he proud of that thing.
He cut me a break by reporting my speed as 1/10th mph less than it actually was so I could leave the county and just mail them the fine. I had guessed with my long hair (student at U of F) that he was going to take me to jail.
I go REAL slow thru Waldo, Hampton, Lawty and....Starke!

Default New Traffic laws

I do 100 miles to work and back every day and like to be safe, but quite frankly on the open road I quite often do 40k over the speed limit mainly when passing vehicles, and drive according to the conditions, I dont see this as a problem on a passing lane. I also dont go balls out unless I am on a quite road with virtually no traffic or at the race track.

People go fast all their lives and dont get killed, look at the Autobahn and other places where traffic moves along at 100mph plus. Drive according to the conditions and the vehicle.
In NZ people follow to close and dont leave adequate room to pass, drivers are aggressive, we have some of the worst drivers in the world. I have had on occasions had people speed up while I am passing them and the gap disappears consequently I am left with no option but to force my way in to avoid a head on collision!
My biggest fear is being hit by a drunk or asleep motorist.

Ah, you have to think of why Illinois wrote the law.

It's not some multitude of deaths or injuries from high speeds, it's to make some group happy or allow the ones who vote for the bill say: "see, I voted for that bill!".

There were already plenty of laws on the Illinois books to correctly prosecute speeders.

Illinois has 5-10 times the number of State LEO's on traffic than any other state I normally travel in. That includes Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Kansas. They are out there collecting taxes.

Where would they put "all" these speeders and reckless doers????

Texting and driving is as bad as it gets. As an experiment, I tried it Once.
Holy Smokes is That dangerous.
I am pretty sure that I could drive better with a load on than texting and driving sober.
I had a girl following me in the Cobra, Texting away and riding my @ss so close I couldn't believe it.
When the opportunity presented itself, I dropped the hammer to get her off my @ss.

Yes they are, a law was recently passed on mobile phone use and it hasnt made any difference, I regularly come behind vehicles going slow, slight weaving and erratic and the driver is on the phone and possibly adjusting their hair at the same time.
