2012 ZL1 CAMARO, It looks like the GT500 has company
http://www.chicagotribune.com/classi...0,669641.story
Chevy is pulling out all the stop and the vaunted moniker on this one. Cadillac CTS-V Engine (Detuned ZR1), magnetic suspension, Brembo brakes...
I was too young to remember 1969, but it's going to be fun to watch the Pony Car Wars heat up again! Any bets as to which will win on the track, the GT500 or the new ZL1?

Nickey
Jerry,
I have seen the cars there, but didn't get to see him tune it, would love to see the dyno sheet. I also went over to the Nickey warehouse too, met the owners who bought the Nickey name. They have some amazing stuff going on there. All kinds of transplants of engines in the new Camaro. I have not seen one on the street yet. They have some old stuff as well, like an original unrestored 1970 Hemi 'cuda survivor, COPO camaros, Shelby GT350 - it was like a car show. The good old days are here again, only faster this time around.

I recently saw the ZL1 at the Philadelphia Auto Show and it was very nice looking. I was dissappointed when they didn't have any literature on it. I am looking forward to seeing a review and comparison.

The LSA runs cast pistons whereby the GT500 uses forged slugs. I think the Moosetang has a sturdier engine base to build big HP with. There's quite a bit difference between the LSA and LS9 other than tuning.
Other than the Cobra, I'm still a Chebby guy all the way though. Where else can you get a 200mph+ dailey driver that knocks down 10 sec quarters while delivering 29mpg on the hiway? Lemme at Tommy!!

They are finally getting around to competing with Ford again. The styling is still left to be desired on the Camaro. Nothing is sweeter than a 1969 Camaro I have one and had several. But you throw a dress on a dogs butt it is still a dogs butt.

That is the same hp as in the Caddy CTS-V where it is de-tuned. The same engine in the ZR1 Corvette is something like 620. I guess they don't want the Camaro to run with the Corvette.

Chevy has been using that formula for decades. Those that recall the birth of the original solid lifter, 11:1 compression LT-1 350 will recall that this motor in the 1970 Corvette was rated at 370HP. The same motor in the Z28 was rated at 360HP. A different ignition system and exhaust headers was the attributed difference for the 10HP. And so that is why the 1970 Z28 (often called a 70 1/2 because of its late introduction) was fondly remembered as the poor man's Corvette.
The new ZL1 is exactly that, but now we can call it the poor man's Z06/ZR1. Either way, would be fun to drive and with drag radials should be solidly in the 11's.

The thing I've been wondering these past several years as the cars get faster & faster, is why aren't the insurance companies doing everything they can to kill these cars like they did back in the late 60's & early 70's? What's different now?

" Chevy Camaro ZL1 roars into Chicago
The most closely guarded secret of the Chicago auto show broke cover on Tuesday morning in the form of the king of all Camaros--the 550-hp ZL1. The name recalls a Chevrolet racing engine dropped into just 69 Camaros in 1969, making them highly coveted among enthusiasts. This new version will offer a six-speed manual transmission paired with the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that pushes out 550..."

At almost 3900 lbs!!! you won't see a Camaro running with a 3100 lb Vette. The Mustangs are starting to trim weight, but the Camaro is still so heavy. You can mod for more hp all you want, but you will always feel that weight when cornering and braking. A base ZO6 can be right at 3100 lbs........imagine adding 4 45# weightlifting plates to EACH fender of your car and then racing it. That's the difference between a Camaro and a Z.

They know whats going on,the're not trying to kill them, but call your agent and get a quote on one of these cars!!!!!!!!!!!!
All autos are "classed" in a classification chart...Complex arrangement, depends on # of cylinders/sports car vs. sedan/average driver age for the car/crash ratings/repair cost and a host of other varaibles.......
Ask what it would cost to insure a 2011 Mustang V-6 coupe and then a Mustang GT and you'll see what I mean........
if you have enough $$$$$$$$ you can insure most anything.......
The federal goverment crappola dealing with the new "smog" rules and unleaded gas and such did more to kill the muscle car era than the insurance companies could have ever done.......
