Arno, congratulations! Thanks for the running commentary on your experience.

Can you shed some light on the Illinois sales tax payment. Did you pay the taxes within the 30 day period? If not, did you pay a penalty and how was the penalty calculated.

Thanks,

Arthur

Thanks Arthur!

For the tax issue, we did not pay the taxes within the 30 day period as we were not aware of it (like most people who go through this process unfortunately).
We just filled out the ST-44 form (I'm pretty sure that is the correct form number, but I can check), and we'll wait to see what they give us as a penalty. We actually are talking to a tax attorney who does the business's taxes, to see what he says... I'll comment on all that when I hear more about it. The thing that makes me feel good is that our taxes will be well taken care of in Illinois... (sarcastic hat on)

Great!!! Having factual information about the entire registration process and tax payments would be fantastic for all of here in Illinois. There is such a veil of gloom that seems to shroud the whole process.

And the sales tax payment within 30 days has to be without a doubt an oversight that many/most consumers/Hobbyists encounter when purchasing parts from around the country. This lack of understanding can result in enormous tax consequences.

I look forward to your further reports.

Thanks,

Arthur

Arthur, Sorry to reply after so long but I just read this. I also didn't know about having to pay taxes when I received the car. I paid them when I sent all the paperwork through the DMV. You must pay everything with separate checks. I don't remember the exact details but it was a chunk.
Arno, Hope all goes right for you and you are on the road soon.Haven't had mine out much this year as I've been really busy or it's just too hot out. We'll meet up one of these days. Wish I knew how to PM you. I wish my car looked as good as yours but it sure is fun to drive. Talk to you later, Russ

Wait until you tell them you have a new crate motor and they ask you what car it came out of , when you tell them it is a crate motor and it is new they don,t understand that and argue with you that it must of came out of some car ? when you get done with that , then see what happens when you tell them about your new crate trans and you do not have a Bill of Sale from some JUNK YARD . It just get better and better .

That has not been a problem at all so far. The Nicholas person in the SOS office understood all the "crate" purchase, as documented by bills of sales and such, and the State police person I spoke with said "no problem , we'll take care of it" when I told him our Pond block had no serial number... I hope for everybody sake that I'm not just lucky and that everybody can get that same good treatment. We'll see Tuesday.

Russ, I'll PM you my email.

Default Illinois Registration

After dealing with Nicholas for 3 1/2 months I must have been one of his first custom built title vehicles. He had all of my receits for a factory crate motor and transmission. I then spent several minutes on the phone with him trying to explain that they did not come out of any car. I started last October and my title is dated 3-15-12. The car is titled as a 1967 Cobra, not a Shell Valley. I would say from your posts and several others that he is starting to get the hang of what his job is. It would have been much less frustrating if he would have told me he was learning how to do this job. Typical bureaucrat. I can only hope that the process continues to be less problematic. My tax penalty for being 14 days late on filing the ST44 was only $75 but I was never told of any time limit on filing this form from any DMV or SOS employees.

The State Police officer just left my house, I should be getting plates in 2-3 weeks! *happy dance*

He was knowledgable and very nice. He looked at the vin, tranny tag, etc... then I started the car so he could evaluate the pipes ("a bit loud but it's alright, especially if you going to replace them" I told him about my issues with the ceramic coater who destroyed my muffler packing. I have a set of new pipes in the garage, I just need to weld them in), then looked at the lights, a few more things and that was it. Not even 30 mins.
For the motor, he said it will just be labeled as a "custom motor" and nothing more. He complimented me on the build.
He mentioned that these custom vehicles plates go through the process quicker then others... "They say a week and a half for plates, but I'll believe when I see it" hah. He said 2-3 weeks is more realistic, especially since they just got a bunch of layoffs in Springfield recently apparently.

In any case, I'm pretty excited!

Arno, Thanks for the update. I'm imagining the happy dance you did.

Great to hear the degree of professionalism from our state workers. Starts to restore ones faith in the people working in public services.

I look forward to hearing more on your tax payment and how any penalty for late filing is handled.

Hope to catch up with you at one of the local events, but that won't happen until I get my build finished.

Arthur

Got the plates today! 3 weeks after the inspection, not too bad at all. Overall I am very satisfied with the whole process

Arthur, haven't heard from the tax folks at all, yet... If I do, I'll let you know. We just sent in the required amount for the purchase, nothing, once again I'll say "yet"

Anybody who wants to know more info, just count me via pm or just ask here.

Congratulations Arno. I look forward to being in your shoes soon. But I still have an enormous amount of work ahead of me.

Enjoy your ride!
