DSS in St. Charles?
Anybody use them to build their motor? Like I stated before I will probably go with Engine Factory but would really like a local builder. I have heard good and bad things about DSS. Should I steer clear?

I have a 289 DSS block with Edelbrock heads and manifold with a 600 cfm carb. Real strong but a few oil leaks from the mains...probably my doing-not theirs. Thinking about a small supercharger for later. Supposed to take it if I keep the boost down.

I have had no experience with DSS, but I have HEARD that their custom motors are pretty good, but the crate motors should be avoided.

GotSnake: I went to DSS when I was looking to build an engine myself back in October (before I decided on Perf. Engineering for any engine needs). They were recommended to me by a guy that runs a Mustang at Rt. 66 (who is a friend of my neighbor). He has a DSS Bullet 510 that puts out almost 700HP. They have a great looking new factory in the ST Charles business district, but they didn't have their Dyno hooked up yet - but that was October. They carry top of the line parts and they have good prices on their short and long blocks. Eric, from Perf Engineering gets some parts from them, although he did say he tried their windage tray and it didn't make much of a difference on the dyno. They have stroker kits avail too for those who want to increase their cubes! If you really want to get crazy, they build a 600ci Ford full race engine that put out 1400+HP! They told me it wouldn't fit under a Cobras hood though.
Send away for their catalog (if you haven't already) www.dssracing.com or call them @ 630-587-1631. Even if you don't go with one of their engines, it's a nice catalog to have just for their parts whenever you're ready for an upgrade or more HP!
Sparks: Looking for a guy that knows his stuff (on Cobra's too) check out St Charles Classic Motors (630) 443-1600. Ask for Alex (owner) and tell him what you have. He actually orders SPF Chassis from Dean @ Dynamic and sells them through his showroom. They usually have a Chassis on display for customers to place orders off of. They also order / install engines from Eric @ Perf Engineering, as well as other builders, and do the installs for the SPF's they sell. His mechanics work on Lambo's, Ferraris, Porches, BMW's etc.. all day and they love working on Cobra's (piece of cake compared to the others!).

Next meeting is not yet set, but we're working on something for late March.
I do not know of any great mechanics in the area that do musclecars... I had a hell of a time finding someone to pull my BB last year.

Why aren't there enough mechanics for Hot Rods in our area? Too many home builders?
BTW: Cdog are we going to do a weekend meeting or weekday? And What do you think about having a meeting at Alumni Club Schaumburg? Just a thought...

I'd recommend DSS.
Just what would you order from them? Complete (crate) engine or custom-built to your specs?
Crate engines, they mass-produce. For a mass-production operation, they're one of the better ones (Keith Craft is very good also).
If you're looking for someone to build you a custom spec engine, then those builders (good ones) are generally low volume, higher priced and scheduled out 6 months in advance.
I don't know if you read about the Billet Specialties' owner's new car (Troy Trepanier built), but my motor was built by the same guy (not Troy T.) down in Mokena. Not cheap (at least 2 x DSS), definitely a long lead time. He's been building for many years. He prefers to work on 'interesting' motors and can be choosy (likes things like old Packard straight-8's). You have email.
