Cobra insurance (not the medical kind)
This week I was informed by my Allstate insurance agent that the coverage that was going to be under-written by Hagerty insurance was rejected. It was surprising to find that they will insure most every classic or hot rod but specifically NOT Cobra roadsters! My agent apoligized for the mistake and placed my car under the same policy as my other vehicles.
The problem is that whenever I want to drive my Cobra a voice mail or email must be sent to remove my car from storage status to driving status. This is a PITA clause that I worry about, as if I forget to call (long hot day at work, pavement calling) will my insurance forget to cover me?
What do the rest of you folks do in this area?

I have mine with Grundy Worldwide (215-674-1856). Their rates are good and they will insure Cobras

Yea I know the drill - it's like you need to educatue your agent. Those of us that built our cars have a little bigger problem.
My insurance is through State Farm. Since we have a few cars & house etc with them the rates are Okay.

I contacted Grungy A couple of months ago, they told me they were no longer insuring cobra replicas.

I just got off the phone with Grundy. They are not insuring cars that are valued at less than 75K. So if you call and give them a value of $75,250.00 they will insure your Cobra. Too many heavy footed drivers with no experience have killed themselves and others resulting in hard to get insurance for Cobras.

Just visited the Grundy website and didn't see any vehicle restrictions, but I guess that I could insure it for a greater value. Perhaps I can buy some more horsepower or something to get my money's worth. I think anything would be better than the restrictions that Allstate has placed on my car. My insurance guy is doing it more as a favor than anything else, but I bought the car to drive not store!

Keith,
My cobra, two other family cars and house are insured with Allstate. The cobra coverage is expensive, but I have $250/500/100K coverage on every vehicle. If you want my agent’s name, e-mail me, or we can discuss during this Sunday’s WCCC holiday party.

Does your agent have the same restrictions (having to inform him of your driving excursions) or is my agent following the over-cautious playbook?

Keith,
I believe your agent is just being overly cautions. I drive my car and the only limitations are 3K miles per year and no other drivers.
Unless you have several moving violations, a DUI, suspended license etc. insuring your cobra is not a big deal. Let’s talk on Sunday.

Keith,
I have my insurance with State Farm also. They have an underwriter that provides this coverage. I had no problems with them, just had to provide pictures of the car. Front side and rear and one picture of the engine compartment. State Farm gave me very good rates on a 5,000 miles per year policy.

It's been my experience with State Farm that one ticket will exclude you from coverage... and that one ticket includes your wife. Absolutely clean driving record.. Husband and wife.

I've got allstate also. I don't have to call everytime I want to drive (my phone bills would exceed my insurance costs). I have to call to start full coverage in April and then call again when I want to store for the winter months. I don't have a mileage restriction either. Just drive away.

Sounds like it all depends on your agent? If he/she is cool and smart you get insurance. If not...

No tickets (just bought it, so I'm still kinda learning), no DUI ( I'm past that phase), and my wife's record is clean (she's real lucky), so I'm sure that my agent just needs to find out more about the how Allstate views my car. I will pass along the information that others have offered to get him up to speed.
A friend suggested I give him a ride in it. I'm thinking " Not a good idea!" One ride and I'm looking for new car and homeowners insurance.

Keith,
I strongly recommend not giving your insurance agent a drive in your cobra. Your agent will undoubtedly think its to much engine/car for the average person to drive. So why go looking for trouble?
When I first insured my car, my agent wanted to see it. That was two years ago. My agent is pretty cool and he's never asked again.

Yea, I don't think I want my agent looking too closely at what the Cobra is and what it can do. Don't need the complications in my life, that's for sure!

Hi Keith,
We met at the WCCC holiday party and discussed several insurance options for your car. I’m just wondering if you successfully convinced your agent to write the policy, called other agent, company etc.
We definitely want you out cruising with us this summer.

Hi Keith
The only thing to count on with insurance and agents is you can’t.
I was with Allstate since the early seventies House Cars and Life.
When I bought my Cobra my agent checked it out and declined it.
He told me Allstate does not insure kit cars.
When I asked for advice he told me to check out some “Cobra sites on the Internet.” Gee…….. Thanks………..
My sweetie, against my objections, joined the AARP a couple of years before.
I got a quote from the Hartford. I was pleasantly surprised when I insured all three (no restrictions on the Cobra) for about a hundred more than I was paying for two. I just renewed for the second year. Price stayed the same.
I did hold my ground, and told her I would join the
AARP ONLY when I get old. Ed Paz

I have been told by my BDR rep that insurance is available for $350 and no stipulations. Anybody buying that?

When my Allstate agent was having my policy underwritten by Hagerty, they had quoted me $342.00 for the year with no stipulations, so that sounds like it maybe legit. Who is BDR anyway?
