Default Who likes front license plates...

We should do this in Illinois:

"We, the Undersigned, petition the State of Ohio to revoke the current law requiring the display of a front license plate on passenger vehicles... "

I've lived in So Cal for 26 years and the only tickets I've ever received for no front license plate is when parking at LAX. Sounds like they are too anal in other parts of the country, though all the talk about these photo cams makes me wonder if that is all going to change soon.

I stopped to talk with a cop about something and he said, "Oh, BTW...some guys might give you a hard time about no front plate...". I made a license plate mount from 2" aluminum angle, with a stainless frame from Griot's, and stuck it in the grille opening, using the oil cooler mounting bolts to hold it in place. It's about as unobtrusive as it gets and now "I am not in violation of the law" (in my best Inspector Clouseau imitation).

I really think most cops are just normal guys who appreciate a nice car the way anyone else would, but once in awhile you run across a stiff d**k. Why give him something to screw you with?

IMO

I agree, and also, what Illinois government official decided to change that nice looking gold colored antique plate we had last year to the new "fleshtone" crap design....looks like a color-blind 2nd grader designed it...

Oh no...probably a color blind (better yet: blind altogether), homosexual, physically- AND emotionally-handicapped, ethnically-challenged 2d grader with same sex Volvo-driving, Starbucks-swilling, liberal-voting, vegan parents...

Just to be fair...

David,

Although it is the law in IL, I have never had a problem with being stopped for no front license plate. I have driven many cars without a front plate. The Cobra and my Noble both are without front plates. When registering the Noble I went out of my way to have a special front bracket constructed just to be used to pass the IL inspection. The inspector checked a number of things but even he had no interest if the car was equiped with a front license plate bracket. I think most cops in the area will let it slide unless the car is doing something else they really don't like. I plan on taking the chance that those cops that care will not find me and if they do I guess I will have a ticket to pay.

And I also agree that the new antique vehicle plate design is not the best. I just got new AV plates for two cars and I wish they were the previous design. It will change again.

Rich

Rich, most cops are "regular people" just doing their jobs and overlooking the bull**** rules. I don't have to tell you there are always the a$$-kissers in every profession! We had a club member last year who got a ticket for "no plates" on the front and another member who got a ticket for using "antique plates" illegally!

Ask Wolfie!
OK, I'll tell ya, since Wolfie is sleeping. Wolfie was visiting his brother-in-law in Richton Park last summer, when this A$$-Kissin' local cop asked him why he was in his town and Wolfie said he was visiting his relative. Well, you cannot drive on antique plates just for the hell of it, it has to be for club events, car shows or to and from your mechani's shop.
He knew all the rules but temporarily forgot what to tell the cop and it cost him $75.

Those beautiful AV tags were probably designed by some cronie of that hair-ball governor of ours.Don't worry,They'll get a pile of money making another one next year.

I know that here in Washington, they will zap you for no front plates (at least here in the state capitol, they will). The Olympia PD can sometimes be a bunch of nitpicking buttmonkeys that apparently have nothing better to do than to harrass people at times.

No, I don't have a problem with law enforcement...just that department. No, I've never received a ticket from them. Why would I say these things? I'll give you a couple examples. One, at the "Lakefair" (a smaller version of Seattle's "Seafair"...a week of general goofing off with fairs, airshows, carshows, hydroplane races, etc.) carshow, one officer came INTO the show, walked around, and stopped to write a ticket to this kid for "suspension exceeding lower limits". The kid that got the ticket had a fully restored 63 Impala convertible...with HYDRAULIC suspension. So, when he got to the show, he slammed it when he parked it, as we probably all would in his shoes. The officer didn't seem to care, and wrote him the ticket anyway.

We all discussed the violation with him and told him to fight it in court, as it would be difficult to get a moving violation when you're not moving. That, and when he does drive, he raises the suspension to above legal limiits, which would invalidate the ticket. Any cop that is so bored as to actually walk into a car show and write tickets, needs a boot to the head.

Another example was the next year at the SAME CAR SHOW. Olympia PD posted a few motorcycle units outside the show, and anyone that left the show grounds by accelerating quickly, but still not breaking traction, was stopped and cited for "excessive display of speed". No, I'm not kidding. We, of course, told each and every owner of these vehicles to take it to court so long as they didn't break traction on the street, and they did. Last I heard, most of them won their cases. Last year, I didn't see ANY Olympia PD officers near the show, but rather Thurston County Sheriffs deputies. Apparently, someone in the county must be a car nut, and got tired of the PD's shenanigans.

So, do I think Olympia PD would pop someone for no front plate? You betcha they would. So, when the day comes that I acquire a Cobra, and actually finish it, I do plan on designing some sort of "stealth plate bracket" that is on an electric actuator, that I can mount on top of the oil cooler which can be activated from the dash that would "flip" the plate up or down. It's the only solution I can see to strike a balance between aesthetics and legal conformity. But that will be a while from now.

Yup, I'm a blabbermouth........sorry.

Not having the front license plate allows for a " probable cause " traffic stop, which then can lead to other problems. I have noticed in news articles a variety of charges, and then appears the " No front license plate "

Got pulled over for speeding last year. And my tail lights went out also (he almost rearended me.) Ticket for speeding and no tail lights. Saw that I didn't have a mirror on the right side of my car(required to have outside mirrors since I'm blind in my left eye.) and expired sticker on my plate. I also didn't have a front plate. He didn't care. Just got speeding and tail light fine. $160. The way I see it I was due.
