Will be out of town the 18th and the 25th is booked up. Looks like Nov. 1 for me.

Jimbo thanks for looking into this; and no not bad at all. Words can't express how little I was looking forward to traveling to Alabama! I would have spent more on travel expenses than the actual tune. Thanks again!!!

Kurt, I'll have to schedule a day to bring my car. The car is out for paint right now and there still needs to be a little work done to the engine before I bring it in. I purchased a synchrometer with my intake, and I need to dial in front to back and bank to bank. When I'm done with that, I just need to wire in the wideband. But the car runs strong and idles fine even without dialing in the intake. Please send me your number so we can set this up.

Bump

Any update on the date??? Nov. 1 was best for several. Not sure we have the 5 Cobras yet. Rain would be my only concern.

Kurt, I called Pony Carbs and talked to John. He said we should not have to touch the jets and never the jets on the center carb. Only consider adjusting hi & low fuel & idle speed screws on each carb and timing. I would also consider changing the springs in the dist. if time permits. I have the spring kit for the MSD on my engine. Again, if time permits. I do not want to limit other people on the dyno.

John sells a DVD for proper adjustment of tri-power set up. I purchased it for reference.

I'm sure this is probably a silly question, but exactly what is "TRI-POWER"? Is that like three individual double barrel carburetors or am I way off on that. If so, where do you find an intake setup like that?

Yes, it is three 2 barrel carbs with progressive linkage also called tri-power. Most of the time it only uses the center carb, until you push the go pedel and open the others at the same time. The change in sound is awesome. My brother had this same set up on his 66 GTO he bought new. I found this Cobra for sale last year and could not resist. PM me your e-mail and I will send some photos.

Google Pony Carbs for more info. They use Autolite Carbs and can size them from 600 cfm to 1000 cfm. Since I have a 302, then mine are 625 cfm total, which makes the car very drivable on the street. 345 hp at the crank per the dyno sheets when it was built, but I want to get it on a chassis dyno and get some rear wheel HP and torque numbers and a tune up.

Intake manifold also comes with it. Pony Carbs runs each tri-power set up on an engine to tune it before it is sold. So it should be a simple bolt on and go. However, I believe the past owner has adjusted it and per John at Pony Carbs it should get better than 17 mpg on a Cobra. He said a Mustang is getting 25 to 28 mpg with a similar set up.

I am still interested in this event and have called Kurt on the date. Nov. 1 IS open for us to get on the Dyno. So who is planning to go????

Weather looks great for a drive.

I may have to cover work for a few hours so I have to be flexible about when I arrive.

Default Dyno Time

For those interested, we still have this Saturday, Nov. 1st available for anyone looking to put their car on and do some runs. Depending on how many people show up, we may be able to do some tuning as well. If anyone is looking for any adjustments or tuning I will need to know in advance. Please email me at kurt@kometmotorsports.com and let me know what you require. I would also like all interested to email me as well so I can schedule the day. Thanks.

Also- We do not need 5 cars if it becomes an issue. We would be happy to have anyone out that is interested.

I am in, what time to be there???

I sent an e-mail also to you Kurt and depending on the results could be looking for some adjustments on the 3 duces, timing, and springs.

I have the springs for the dist.

I just dropped my car off, getting the oil changed, clutch fluid replaced, float on carb adjusted and if they have time, getting the Dyno tomorrow morning. It is a nice shop and lot of nice cars in there, saw a '68 GT 500 and some other nice stuff. I have 3 soccer games on Saturday, not sure what time I can get by, so I dropped the car off early.

I want to say thanks to all at Komet Motor Sports for the tune up on my Cobra today. Great work guys.

Kurt, Frank, Jerry Clayton and his son worked on my Cobra until the Cobra broke the dyno. Ha Ha. No, had a problem with a connector and could not get the speed sensor to work after 4 pulls. We got most of it done and I am sure the dyno will be fixed next week. The numbers are not impressive, but the torque curve is flat as a table.

Started at 233.5 rwhp and 228.6 rwtq.

Finished at 256.4 rwhp and 246 rwtq at 3476 rpm.

Torque is 240 ft-lbs at 3200 rpm and does not drop below 240 ft-lbs until 5200 rpm. Even at top speed of 5970 rpm the torque was about 230 ft-lbs and the plot starts at 2500 rpm at 220 ft-lbs of torque. Flat as a table and torque IS acceleration, not horsepower. This car pulls right upto the rev limiter, no drop off you can feel by the seat of your pants.

Thanks again, Lee

Talking 120 HP for $100 in 20 minutes

As a follow up, I just bought my Backdraft at the end of August 2008 and never had it tuned. I thought it was pretty fast, but I took it to Frank at Komet Motorsports for a dyno run. Turned out the primary and secondaries on the carburator were not opening all the way and the float on the carburator was too low.

First run was a paltry 230hp (for this engine) at the rear wheels. In 20 minutes, they found an additional 120 hp. We were at 350hp at the rear wheels and we hadn't touched the timing, finished the adjusting the carbs or fine tuning the engine, but I had to leave.

He found 120hp for $100 in 20 minutes- not bad at all. You lose about 15-20% of HP after the flywheel, so the engine is putting about 430hp now. Frank thinks we can find at least another 25 to 50 hp in there. I will bring it back in spring to finish the job. You should stop by before you head out to Byron next year, it should be worth a few tenths.
