Be side-pipes on BDR, any recommedations for the shop to do it in Illinois?
I'd been considering changing pipes on the BDR as Ford Racing is telling me they are hurting the performance. I just found this post: New Mufflers for the BDR;)
If you look at the picture, there are two tiny (maybe 3/4 inch) holes in this huge pipe, not the most free breathing things in the world so they are getting replaced, anyone know a good shop to do the work?
I am going to get the cobra back from classic chambered exhaust. They will be a bit louder, but I can live with it.
Thanks in advance.

Contact info
Jerry,
Thanks, thanks, do you have a phone number, I don't know him. As soon as that is done, the next step is to have you and your son do the AFR heads and cam, then I'll get the linelock and drag radials. I want 11's.

side-pipes on BDR
Buddy Neely put a set of the 3 inch ID Powerstick mufflers on his Backdraft. He got the mufflers from Classic Chambered Exhaust, Inc http://www.classicchambered.com/classic/products.html
He also got the 3 1/2 inch turn outs. We cut the old mufflers at the front of the muffler and welded in the new Power Sticks along with the 3 1/2 inch turn outs. We also welded in some O2 bungs while we were at it so we could hook up an Innovate LM-1 for tuning. As for the rear end in your Backdraft, I don't know if the BMW rear end will handle the increased horsepower along with slicks/drag radials. We took the BMW rear end out of Buddy's Backdraft and put in a 9 inch Ford rear end with a triangulated four link and QA1 coil-overs.

Classic Chambered
RJCCOBRA,
I'd love to see it. I'd appreciate it if we could all all hook up and chat about it, I have got his Bud's number and if you can join us - that be great, maybe I can buy breakfast or a few beers. Feel free to send me a private message with your number. I called Classic Chambered Exhaust and spoke with the owner, great guy - very, very helpful. I love the Cobrapack setup. The only issue is that I don't want to ceramic coat them, I like the stainless look. I may have them chromed, not sure I have found a solution yet on that issue and need help with the welding.
Regarding the rear end, I call Reg Dod (the Backdraft dealer in Florida). He told me the car can handle over 550hp at the rear wheels (or around 700 at the flywheel. His dealer showcar has 750hp and uses the same rear end. I have a few calls into BMW to confirm as it uses the 2005 325i rearend. Reg did tell me that it would not be wise to do a hard launch at 4000rpm with drag radials, but could hand 2500 fairly easy. I'll keep it for now, if I start snapping half shafts like Wolfie, I put in something more robust.
Thanks - any ideas are welcome and appreciated. I am still figuring this out. I am going to have Jerry Clayton and Komet do the engine mods.

Cobra noise
this past winter I re-worked my side pipes. I removed the 2 1/2" x 24" mufflers and installed Classic's Cobra Packs 3" x 28". The old mufflers had the louvers turned backwards. And they where loud. Very loud at 6000 rpms.
When I installed the new mufflers I turned the louvers the correct way and used a larger diameter muffler and longer to quiet the motor.
It worked. Great sound at low rpms, loud but not obnoxious at 6500. You can talk at 70 mph on the road. I love them. Should have done it years ago.
Dwight
I got pulled over by a cop a few years back because of my sidepipes. He was three blocks away sitting in the patrol car with the window down. I did a 6000 rpm first gear burnout, showing out for my passenger. He heard me and chased me down. He did not give me a ticket but he got part of my rear end.

The limit on gears is usually torque, not horsepower. If you can find out what the limit is for torque and match it to your engine output through each transmission gear as the input torque to the differential. This would be ideal, if you can find the information.
However, traction at the wheels is also limiting on some Cobra's, so you can not develop the max. torque input to the differential (wheel spin). On some applications this is what saves the differential gears and transmissions, IMO.

Your getting out of my paygrade here, but I can tell you I have a TKO 500 trans. Backdraft used a 2005 BMW 325i rear end, I suppose I could all BMW, but I am not sure what to ask for. My engine now is a Ford Motorsports 392 stroker with 430hp and 450tq out of the box and probably about 325hp/350tq at the wheels. The numbers will go way north of that when I change the heads/cam and redue the sidepipes.
Does that help?

Heads cam and sidepipes! Now your talking! How is that wilwood slave cyl on the clutch working out? You sure you want louder pipes in our neighborhood?

Pipes, heads, cam, tires and slave
Sid,
Hey how have you been? We keep missing eachother this summer. The slave is better, we switched to a bigger bore on the master and the slave and bracket from Bill Littleton. Still not perfect, I have mild issues after long drives on hot days - but much better. I am going to have to take it to Greater Cincinnati Motorsports and have Bill look at it.
Regarding the pipes, the neighbors might not care for it too much, but I figure I can always blame it on you. Afterall, what are the odds of two grey and silver Backdrafts a couple blocks apart? I'll blame it on the single guy who is on the Board of the Cobra Club.
How was India?

we did something to Sid's pipes long time ago, but I seem to remember that it was headers and putting a flange on the pipes to eliminate the leaking slip joints
