Description: This is it! Your opportunity to own a 289 Slab-side cobra that’s as close as you can get to original for an affordable price! This 289 Cobra was Factory Built in 1982 by Aurora Ltd. and is serial number 69 of approximately 150 cars! These rare cars were offered only as a complete car (Not a Kit) from 1978 to 1983. They underwent DOT crash testing and emissions certification required at the time for sale in the U.S. I was told they were sold through limited Ford dealers priced around $36,000. For details on the construction and history of these Canadian built cars and to see additional pics of my car please go to www.auroracobra.org owners gallery car #69.
Owning this cobra since the fall of 1997, I have completed a lot of restoration as well as many upgrades. As seen in the pics, the car comes with both a soft and hardtop, with the hardtop being the rare hard-to-find “bubble top” from England. The side curtains are fitted to the hardtop, but as shown in the pics will fit the soft top just fine. A tanneau cover that zips-out for the driver also comes with the car. As shown in the pics, both tops fit with the roll bar in place to ensure safety at all times. The original style custom seats are extremely comfortable and use the Simpson racing harness and bolt in functional roll bar for safety.
This car has been prepared for long distance driving; I am 6’ 260lbs with 32 inch inseam and have driven this car on several cross country trips up to 16 hours straight with a passenger. Visible inside the drivers’ foot well are the original style floor mounted pedals that can be adjusted to fit almost any size driver. A heater/defroster/AC unit has been fitted behind the instrument panel, and the very cold R-134a air conditioning system vents from the dash and into both foot wells. To make long driving even more enjoyable; Cruise Control has been added, and is operated by controls hidden behind the ash tray door to maintain the original cockpit appearance.
This 289 Cobra is size correct! The wheelbase length and width are identical to the original 289 cobra. The 5 year old 15 inch Dayton Wire knock-offs still look new and set this car apart in perfect originality. Driving this Cobra is incredible the sound the power, it will take you back to the 60’s! Like the original, this car has an independent rear suspension, with limited slip 331 gears meaning all the power gets to the road with minimal tire spin! Disc brakes all the way around; the rear brakes are inboard with dual piston calipers, where single pistons are used upfront. The brakes work properly but are not vacuum assisted therefore they do require stiff peddle pressure to stop. The track tuned suspension is coil over carrera shocks; spring rates are 400lbs rear and 250lbs front. The original 302 cubic inch Engine has been bored and stroked to 347 cubic inches, the block was decked and line bored with torque plates, balanced, and professionally assembled using Probe pistons (No wrist pin protrusion into oil control ring). The heads were reworked to have larger 1.94 inch intake and 1.6 inch exhaust valves, ported for smoother flow and cc’d to ensure an even 9.5/1 compression ratio. Full roller rockers are used up top driven by a Comp Cam XE274H-10 .520” lift flat tappet cam that makes an incredible lope at idle venting through the dual Flowmaster mufflers. The exhaust system is custom with modified headman headers and all fed through a 600 cfm Holley carburetor with jetted secondary’s and a Mallory dual point ignition system.

All Modifications to the Aurora were made to better replicate the original 289 street cobra with consideration to safety and functionality. Other modifications Include: Elimination of Aurora padding and dash, then adding a more original cobra correct instrument panel/glove box with correct cockpit finished edge; Added T-5 overdrive transmission; Added cobra correct interior seats and trim; Cobra front grill and nudge bar mounted cobra correct; Cobra correct Lucas tail lights with elimination of side marker lights; 15 inch wheels; Single Ray-Dot mirror; Original type side curtains and Top; Original style custom undercar exhaust. I also want to mention the fact the fuel cap had to be relocated to accommodate the hardtop; an extension was added to the fuel fill tube that slows the refueling process preventing a speedy gas stop; Total fill time for the 16 gallon tank has not been more than five minutes from empty.
The overall condition of the paint and chrome is okay, the car was painted in my garage 5 years ago and by the pics still looks good. However, the rear bumper, roll bar and windshield frame are 28 years old and showing a little patina. Don’t get me wrong though, this Cobra has a great look to it! Because it’s not so perfect it is always mistaken for an original! Many cobra owners and people that should know better have had to tap on the side. The paint is acceptable for most car shows but is not concourse. The body is straight and would require minimal work for a show quality re-spray. This car is by no means a slouch, and I look forward to seeing the look on the new owners face when they see this car! You will love owning this time machine.
You can hear this car run on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYvag2Fm1pU or typing “289 Aurora cobra for sale” Please contact me with any questions. The car is in Crestview, FL and will be made available at anytime to anyone who wishes to see it!
