I recently got an email from someone that I would like to share. It goes straight to the issue of "all Builds are Not Equal"
Here is his email:
Quote:
I am the guy from Lawton. Checking your car out again. Not sure I need 500 HP after doing my research. You are back on my watch list, but not ready to pull the trigger. Good luck, very nice car. I amm told that these beasts need lots of TLC (maintenance.). WOuld that apply to yours?

Thx,

Lewis
And here is my response:
Quote:
In regards to your question about maintenance, my car is put together
right and therefore very reliable.
Reliablity has alot to due with the quality of the components and the
build. Starting with the engine, some people try to get too much
horse power and or their engine components are not matched well
together as a whole or not assembled well.
I went with the top Ford engine bulder for Cobras, Southern
Automotive. They have the experience and a well deserved reputation
of building reliable engines.
By having Unique installing the drive train, the suspension, brakes
and so forth, everything was put together right.
There are shade tree mechanics of varying skills that think they know
what they are doing and some are better than others. BUT there is a
hugh difference between dabbling in something in your time off and
being a full time, professional trained and certified mechanic,
specalized on working on Ford engines or putting together one product
like a factory Unique car.
One my car, EVERYTHING was made of 100% new components or
professionally remanufactured components. There are alot of builds
out there that are made up from old "donnor" cars that are 20-25 years
old and have who knows how many miles.
A 1985 mustang with 200,000 miles requires alot of TLC! Cutting
corners and sticking those old parts back in a Cobra is not going to
make them any more reliable. Then add on top of that, added horse
power and an abusive driver, you will need even more TLC!
Good luck on you Cobra quest. Be careful and do alot of homework!

Trent,

Thanaks for the feedback. This is what I have been hearing about the backyard builds. Would the short answer be that your car needs just good regular maintenance until she get more miles on her?

Thx,

Lewis

Hello Trent, can you supply me with the particulars about the engine parts, specs and if you have the dyno sheet, would be great. What type of cam, the specs, crank, rods pistons ect... What heads, machining, porting ect.. I just need a lot more detail.

Also, who did the body work, paint and assembly ?

Please post it here or email me the information to- cobrakev@galaxycable.net

Thank you,
Kevin

The car is perfect and does not anything. Of course you will want to keep up with regular maintence as you would with any vehicle.
I believe that you can find the particulars on the motor on Southern Automotive's web site. http://www.southernautomotiveengines.com/
Go to products>351W. I also have Ford Racing Roller Rocker Arms.
All of the body work and painting was done at the Unique factory. The engine and trans were installed by Unique. I'll email you my phone number. Feel free to call me.
