Downlegs were standard on these Chas.
The booster is the part that extends out over the top of each of the 4 open holes in the carb. Straight boosters come straight out into the opening parallel to the carb body and base. Downlegs actually curve down into the mouth of the 4 barrels (see pics). The difference has to do with the signal desired for the application. This is one of a few of the things that make these Ford carbs unique to Ford FE applications versus standard 1850 carbs.
Just an FYI, the float bowls shown in the pics are not correct for the original carb, they look to be 3310 bowls. The original 3300/3301s also didn't have a rear metering block, they had plates.
