Installing a new Harmonic Balancer key, a new Spacer, and a new Harmonic Balancer
The next step in my engine swap from a 520 to a 502 will be to install the new (unweighted) harmonic balancer spacer, the new harmonic balancer key, and the old harmonic balancer from the 520 onto the 502. It'll be a bit different from a small block Chevy, which does not use a spacer. I imagine the procedure to be something like this:
1. Grease the spacer then place it on the crankshaft, aligned with the crankshaft timing gear key.
2. Tap the harmonic balancer key in place using a rubber hammer.
3. Heatup the harmonic balancer in boiling water to expand the hub.
4. Install the (greased) harmonic balancer on the crankshaft, aligned with the harmonic balancer key, using a block of wood and a hammer to get it started.
5. Tighten the crankshaft bolt to complete the installation.
Any helpful hints? Should I expect this to be a straight forward installation, or can I expect the interference fit to give me problems?

Since you're working on a Ford, you don't need all the hammers.
Seriously, I wouldn't be using a hammer and wood to install a harmonic balancer. Go to Autozone and rent a "balancer install tool".
Since the balancer spacer rides in the timing cover seal, put oil around the spacer before you slide it in.
Make sure and torque the balancer bolt. The torque spec will depend on if it's a factory bolt or an ARP.
Some balancers are hone to fit. Most will go on without issue, but depending on the brand, it could be a fight. Put some oil or never-seize on the inside of the balancer before you hang it on the crank.

Thanks, Brent. I just called my local Auto Zone store. They have a balancer installation tool available for rent. I'll be headed there shortly.

Heheh...I must admit, that was funny. Being a life long small block Chevy enthusiast, I initially thought that I should feel a little offended. Buy hey, I no longer own any Chevies. It's all Ford power from here.

The keyway just tap er in with a small mallet. Put the the spacer on clean no oil as it's not moving independently of the crank. The balancer I simply ran down effortlessly with the bolt and tightened. Goes on without issue. No soaking no hammering. Done it for years this way
