AC MKIV steering shaft firewall bushing
I have a problem with the nylon bushing that supports the steering shaft through the firewall. The bushing is mounted in a metal plate and the metal plate is attached to the firewall/footwell box by four bolts. The bushing doesn't appear to be broken it's just loose and not attached to anything. This allows the steering wheel and column to move vertically approx., 1/2". Has anyone had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

Lonnie,
To date no one I am aware of has been able to identify the donor vehicle for the dash bushing.
See AC Owners Club - Firewall bushing
At this point fabricating is the only means of replacement. Any decent machinist should be able to carve a block of Delrin into a long lasting bushing.

I would try contacting Nick Acton at www.actoncobras.com. He is very knowledgable about Autokraft cobras and may be a good source to fabricate what you need.

Any luck on a fix for your steering column problem ,
I have a similar issue with my 85 AC MK IV , I have not thoroughly investigated it yet ,but have play on the firewall end of the steering column,

An engineer friend of mine helped me to remove the broken bushing from the firewall (you have to disconnect the steering shaft, not an easy job). He had a local machine shop machine a new bushing from Nylon (Delryn I think). It replaced the old one perfectly. I had two pcs made and would sell the spare part if you are interested. I had the part made since I was told no one makes or sells this part for MKIV's. LC

This is what i wrote in my rebuild report on the ACOC Forum:
Back again with improvements and spare part infos.
Last weekend during a nice tour in Bavaria i faced a problem some of you may had in the past as well.
The steering column became "loose" and felt indifferent because this small rubber part in the foot well broke.
The part itself is called "lower steering column support bushing" or "lower steering column support bushing". My car is a 1985 and use the SD1 column and stalks so the correct rubber thing is a Rover/MG part as well.
It is pressed into a metal bracket screwed to the front of the drivers foot box front wall.
The original rubber piece has the Rover MG number "CRC360", a also available PU tuning part from company Super Flex Polyurthane in the UK has the part number SF2109.

I ordered 2 of every kind and if i consider a 30 years lifetime each I'm prepared for the next 120 years.....
