Safety wire tool size and type
What size safety wire pliers will work well for spinner safety wire? I want to buy a good US-made pair of Milbar pliers (used) and am wondering if the 6" model will do the trick. I found a pair at a really good price. Also, are the basic, manual, clockwise pliers good, or is it worthwhile to get the reversible, automatic return ones?

Buy whatever safety pliers you can afford. You only use them on the knock offs.
In fact, regular vise grips will do the job.

I use .021stainless wire. It's easier to work with and not as rigid as the heavier stuff. Looks better too. For tools I use a pair of duckbill pliers with push rods from a 2800 radial welded to the handles. Reality easy tu use and a lot handier than the twisting kind.

The wire ERA supplied is .031" (I think). I wired the rear wheels last night and the HF tool worked ok, but it's a cheapie and life's too short to use Chinese tools. I ended up buying a Milbar 11W (CW only, 6") for $20 (including shipping) on Ebay. I'll let you know how they compare once it arrives.

Lots of opinions on the subject of safety wire size. The info below was taken from the PEGASUS Auto Racing Supplies web site.

Safety wiring remains the most positive and assured method of securing critical fasteners. Our 1 pound spools of type 304 stainless steel safety wire are supplied in tangle resistant dispenser packs. Packaged by weight, so lengths are approximate.
