Default Checking Sidepipe Temps

Just wondering if you guys check the temperature of your side pipes regularly. I did a very quick check of mine yesterday. Found out afterwards that Mothers aluminum polish does quite a good job of removing charred shin skin

I still have a nice scar on my left leg from the very same thing. I have since has Bill Emerson from Emerson Motorsports, Redding, Ca put new mufflers in my exhaust and has wrapped them (around the muffler but inside the polished tube) with some new insulation he's come up with. They still get hot but not even close to before. You can actually briefly touch the exhaust without a burn. Well worth looking into. Mine is the first car he's tried this insulation on and it really does make a big difference. Good luck

Mine gets up to 340 at the collector merge and 160 at the exit cut. They're coated stainless. Headpipes 450-500; 800+ at the flange.

Mother in law once jumped on our Harley with nylons on to show friends how she loved our bike just as we pulled into a family function. The skin and nylon mix would not polish off. From that day forward all our Harleys exhaust was painted black.
Mother in law loved to explain her new tattoo.

Well, I'm glad to know that I'm in good company and that I'm not the only one who has moments of brain fade

I'm enjoying reading others experiences with the sidepipes. I'm starting to appreciate the under-car exhaust systems.

Greg,
Wish I had known about the insulation you had done on your pipes about a month earlier. I just paid a pretty good sum to have mine ceramic coated and I'm pretty sure the SPF pipes would have to be cut open and re-welded to do the insulation.

ERA Chas,
I'm pretty impressed that you actually KNOW the temps of your pipes. I suppose I could assume that mine are somewhere in the ballpark of those temps. Kind of explains why those skin transplants happen so FAST

If your pipes are a polished silver ceramic I've had some success with heating the pipes/foreign material up with a heat gun and using 4O (OOOO) steel wool to gently scrub off the foreign material. Let the pipes cool completely and then use some more 4O and Mother's metal polish to clean up the rest. The 4O is softer than the ceramic coating and will clean/polish but not scratch.
Like most warnings on cleaning products try in a small unobtrusive spot first to make sure it functions as advertised.

Assuming your compression and timing are similar to mine and you have coated stainless pipes.

There are plenty of brands and prices to choose from.

Are those temps at idle after some run time or at some throttle level?

Idling after hard running. Water 220, oil 230, 93 octane.

Hi Guys, Wrapped the muffler section on my chrome side pipes on my ERA with fiberglass header wrap then put a set of covers from Finishline over the muffler. Though quite warm to the touch, not scaulding enough to burn you. Even after a long drive. The "Boss" approves.........

You don't need any temperature measurement devices, take them to a car show and use kids shoes to test them............
