1964 427 Engine FOUND! What do I do with it???
So I know very little about 1960’s Cobras… however, I recently inherited an original 1964 427FE Engine (C4AE- 6090-H). The engine was originally installed into a ‘Luxury Regent Speed Boat’ (go figure…) and has not been changed since removed from the boat. It will need some new parts to go into a Cobra but based on my research, this is the engine which would be original equipment for a 1964-65 3100 Series low-riser Cobra. It was packed away in storage for most of its life and is in great condition. I had a shop lube it up and get it running, here is a video of it from a few months ago: 1964, 427 Cobra Jet - YouTube
If anyone has any advice on where to find an appropriate buyer please let me know! (I am located near Chicago) Any info or help would be much appreciated!!! |

The heads (which is the casting number you posted above) are low riser items.
What is the casting number off the block?

Didn't some marine FE's turn the opposite direction from the street engines?

I understand some were reverse rotation for mounting in tandam with a normal rotation motor to balance out the rotational forces. That one appears to be rotating clockwise from the video. Nice piece - sounds pretty good.

Larry is right. The firing order was ground of the counter-rotating engine. Special camshaft, too.
Most of them were Chris-Craft 300 horsepower. The marine stuff is getting rare. This engine has water - cooled exhaust manifolds.
I put a few buyers and sellers in touch and never even met either one. It was cool.

The only thing I can find on the block is: 04A(4?) 6015-A
Does that mean anything to anyone? The intake is a C3AE-9425-K
Carbs are Holley 600s I believe. Would this engine be worth anything to an AC Cobra enthusiast or am I barking up the wrong tree?

According to my reference materials, if the block is C4AE-A, it is a '64 427 Top Oiler
Manifold C3AE-K is a '63 427 8V Aluminum dual plane
Makes sense for a '64 427 Low Rise Center Oiler

I would say so for someone trying to replicate a 65 427 Street Roadster or to someone trying to re-engine a 64 Galaxie 427. |

Watch out for old engines that were used in a boat. The older boat engines used river [or salt water] water to cool the engine.
What I have seen on some of these old engines is, nice looking blocks on the outside, but eat up on the inside.
A friend of mine bought [against my advise] two 289 engines from a boat [ I think they were called interceptors, but I can't remember].
I told him about the water problem, but he didn't listen, and tried to bore one of them .030, and hit a rust bubble hole in two cylinders.
I would pull the freeze plugs, and try to get a look at the insides as much as I could before sinking any money into it.
