NY Registration f'en NIGHTMARE!!
Its no surprise that people working at any DMV typically have the mentality of a foozball. Or if they don't, they have the motivation of a slug....
Trying to register my - out of state cobra purchase - i had to go back 4 times, yup 4 times to get information on exactly what i need to register the vehicle in NY. Each trip i received 4 completely different answers from 4 different people.
Today i finally have everything ever told to me, from the start of history, in my hand to get it registered in NY........ only to be told..... "your inspection is invalid because you cannot inspect a vehicle that hasn't been registered" are you f'en kidding me??? I had to school them on their own jobs...
I'm moving to TX in 2 years. Which is 2 years too long to wait. Crazy. Sorry for the abbreviated profanity.
Had to vent.

Sorry to hear about the nightmare; it can vary so much depending on the DMV and personnel. I was in and out in about 5 minutes when I registered my car. So, is it on the road now?

If you went to the NF DMV no surprise! Always know the real story and be prepared to school the clerks with the law! Been there, did that.......

OK I'm going to throw some gas on this fire
it takes us about 30 minutes to register an out of state Cobra in Alabama.
they look at the paperwork and check the vin number to see that it matches.

Let me know if you need lense numbers, etc. I have all documents and forms from when I went through the process. Luckily it went smooth for me, but it was a first time registration/inspection.

When I did my cobra in colorado it was 15 minutes at the desk and I left with a csx vin, a 65 title and a 5 year plate. I think that's just the wild west, eh?

In Ohio, you take the car to the State Highway Patrol of a dealership and they verify the vin. You drive tot he BMV and get title and license.
They guy who verified mine didn't even look at the car. He asked if it matched, I said yes, and it was done.

Registration in Vermont for my 1st Cobra (Lone Star) and years later for my ERA Slabside was straight forward - it's all about the sales tax. Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles likes the money.

That nightmare sounds like some of the California DMVs. A few are really good and others won't even try to help you get one registered. They finally got rid of all of the DMV workers at our local one a few years ago because everyone was going to other places to have their DMV work done, and this was on regular vehicles as well as the special construction ones.

I've helped dozens of Cobra replica owners title their cars in NYS without ever a hiccup. What seemed to be your dilemma? The more details you post, the better we can assist the next potential cobra owner when it comes to titling these cars.
We'll await your detailed issues and resolutions

Here is the guy you need to talk to register a Cobra Replica in NYS:
"Here's an email address (and the correct spelling) for Mark who is our go to guy now that Tom has retired - mark.engel@dmv.ny.gov or 518-474-5282"
I registered an FFR Mark II from NH but with RI VIN without "too" much trouble. I did have to take it to Field Inspections on a trailer but after that it was no trouble.
LMK if you have any trouble, I live near Albany.

Yup! Here in CA I went to a DMV and ended up with a woman that looked at my VIN and said "Oh no, no way. This isn't a real VIN number! They have to be 14 characters or so long with numbers and letters!".
Finally had to speak with supervisor because the woman "helping" me refused to process things "under her watch". Quite frustrating for sure.

I had a similar experience last year I purchased a 2002 Superformance cobra (SP01400) form Minnesota and live in Moravia, NY. I had to tow the car to an inspection station in Syracuse, NY to have a New York Vin No. and to have it registered as a 2002 Custom to get around the NY state smog laws. Once you have the paperwork completed and turned in from the inspection station it takes about 4 to 6 weeks before you see the approved form in the mail. Once you have the form you take that and proof of insurance to the DVM for your plates. It can be done in NY. I purchased the car in the beginning of May and on the street by the end of June.
