Default 1963 Cobra Crash at Goodwood

" Three crashes involving vintage race cars occurred this past weekend at the 74th Goodwood Member's Meeting, including a rare 1963 Shelby Cobra fitted with a Le Mans-style hardtop "

I admire the hell out of those guys driving their cars hard and risking the consequences. Good on em.

Glad the driver is ok and the car can be fixed.

I agree Dallas. And
when that Walton boy wrecked his Daytona Coupe at the Monterrey Historics everyone though it was sacrilegious. But as he said, if I can afford the car I can certainly afford to have it repaired.

Before I saw the above comment, when viewing the crash I thought "Well, he was not hurt, and presumably, anyone running one of these on the track can afford to have it wrecked".

As far as the "Irreplaceable piece of history" arguments might go, it's just a car and there are others.

If each of the Daytona Coupes were turned to scrap, are those replaceable? Certainly not. I think some of these cars actually are irreplaceable given their unique and significant history.

OUCH alright!
What a darn shame.

...and that my friends is an example of how non-ABS cars fail to handle both braking and turning at the same time.

I'm not suggesting that I'd have had the presence of mind to have pumped the brakes myself, but that the poor driver got caught like a dear in the head lights on that one.

Glad he's OK, and I hope the car is returned back to its former beauty.

I watched that video several times and it didn't look normal. The brakes were working but the car wasn't slowing. He had no chance to make the corner and it wasn't even close. This is an experienced driver and not his first time doing this stuff. I had a hunch it was a stuck throttle. Sure enough, if you read the comments under the video the co-owner / driver shares that the throttle hung open. I've never had that happen, but I know it's a very scary thing.

Non-ABS cars can handle turning / braking (trail braking) at the same time just fine. The name for it is: Miata.

Looks like the trouble started at the straight, driver locked up the brakes but the rear wheels kept propelling the car through the turn.....yes I agree likely due to a stuck throttle. Damn shame. Hope driver and car will be OK.

I thought I heard somewhere before that Goodwood should rename the Shelby Cup to the Kirkham cup due to the cars competing there.

You don't suppose that "authentic" 1963 Cobra was a Kirkham with original style suspension, girling brakes, etc. ?

Still just a car, and they all won't be trashed. This will be rebuilt, and at least some of the panels will be original, if it indeed was an original car to start with.

You win, Kid. Evidently I'm unable to effectively communicate what I mean.
