Less weight, less wind resistance and most sanctioning bodies require some form of windshield to deflect materials and objects that may be bouncing down the track. You would be surprised at how much even a minimal windscreen will deflect the airflow so that it goes over the drivers head. Lots of things, including chunks of rubber, broken bolts and other assorted car parts come flying at you on the track. My completion windshield has a few cracks and divots in it.
