Driving Light Additions...?
Hi All,
I am interested in seeing and reading about some of the driving light additions you have made to your cars to improve night time and poor weather visibility. Which lights, size, bulbs, etc.. how were the results? Any regrets? I'm a big fan of this look...
Thank you,
Mike

Mike, I added driving lights (Cibe Oscars), Made mounting brackets clamps that attached to the bumper mounts. The Oscars allow you to move the lens and place the mount 90 degrees. The look vintage rally (I like), and the performance is spectacular. I found the lights for a very reasonable price an Amazon or Ebay (search under vintage driving lights) they are replicas, but still work very well and match the vintage look of the Cobra.
Mark.
Send me a PM with E mail I'll shoot you a photo.

I swapped bulbs for LED's. Still in same housing, so it looks completely stock. Huge improvement for small cost and effort.

Hi Bob,
Was the light a big jump over halogen bulb replacement? Did you have to included inline resistors and such? I like the look of driving lights, but these cars definitely could use a better recipe for headlight lumens!!!
Thanks for the feedback,
Mike

It was a HUGE improvement over halogen. Huge. The stock lighting was really awful.
I bought some direct replacements from Super Bright, with built in resisters. It was really a plug and play deal.

Do you happen to know what the part number was for those Bob? I'd be interested.

I’ve been kicking around a conversion to led. Mark has the entire package ready to go. Looks interesting

I don't have the part numbers right now. I know that box with the old bulbs is around here somewhere, But I can't find them. IIRC, I had to take the original bulb out to find out what type it was.

What about mounting a light bar in the oil cooler slot or in the lower part of the opening? JD

I have the Tangent light setup down there, twin bulbs, pair of 5w for DRL, and two for driving. Sadly Tangent is out of business, but wouldn’t be hard to make one.

I have generic H-D LEDs and they work great. They plug in without resistors. 165° beam lights up the ditches next to the car.
Here is a link, so you can see what they look like.

Mike, as a side note, I did replace the seal beams with H-4 halogens, (again a Cibe round none seal beam euro lights) that made a great improvement over the seal beams.
I believe that Hella has a similar light fixture still available.
Mark.

As most replicas do not have the OE support tube that runs above the oil cooler opening to weld on some brackets, does anyone have any pics of bracketry/supporting structures that have been used to mount driving lights? I've never come across any pics of OE solutions...

Bob are you talking about head lights? If so I'm very interested.

Hi XB. Thank you. Yes, every bit helps. I thought that 427's only had the driving lights
tucked into the radiator opening, but I have not considered the variations that 289's used.
I am unsure as to where I want to mount them now. Seems that the 289's add on a simple
bracket to the QJ spud, which open the options for bottom or rear mount driving lights.
Anybody have 427 references where they are located inside the radiator opening?
Thank you again,
Mike

Yes, headlight bulb. I pulled out the halogen bulb that was in there, and installed a direct LED replacement from Diode Dynamics. I can't find the receipt, and I don't know what the number was.
The light is brighter, more white than yellow, and has a sharper cut off. Huge improvement.
