Identifying 9" origin, without build tag?
Any Ford 9" experts? Looking to identify the rear in my Cobra without a build tag. It's a disc brake rear, with some of these numbers cast into the center section. 817.7 34 8ZC 34, and D2AW-F is stamped into it. Any ideas what it's from. It has 2 dimples on the rear housing, and may have been narrowed. It's a 28 spline , big bearing.
Thanks in advance

The first letter determines the decade A=40s, B=50s, C=60s d=70s, The next number is the year of the decade, in your case D2 would be 1972. That will not tell you the actual year, just the year that part was FIRST used.

Ford used 9 inch rears with disc brakes on Granadas and Lincoln Versailles in the mid-late 70s. They were the right width to swap directly into a mid 60s Mustang.

Make sure it’s a nodular iron case, it will be marked with a large “N”.

Mine is not an 'N' case and it's plenty suitable for my usage. Also 'only' 28 splines. Again, plenty suitable. If I was drag racing or running a 5,000 pound truck things might be different, but I'm quite okay with my non-nodular case.

Not an N case, if I understand, they have vertical and horizontal ribbing, mine is just horizontal. 72 might be correct, as the motor decoded to be a 74 Windsor.

Sounds like it's been built up from various parts. There are no rear disc rear ends that have the two dimple back cover. All the factory rear disc 9" rears have the big tapered center stampings with the humped cover. Versailles and full sized. Pictures of it may help identify it.

If it’s a 5 on 5 spacing it’s most likely the Lincoln type rear . I just went through the same thing . My fronts are 4.5 studs my rear are 5 on 5.

Also if it is the Lincoln type. Throw those garbage Lincoln calipers as far as possible get the kit from performance unlimited and enjoy actual braking. My cobra now stops as good as my 930 for less than $400.00 in less than 2 hours of installation time.
