Tom's suggestion is a good one. I have always done that but don't know if I learned it from someone or if it was sort of intuitive.
One suggestion to add to Tom's: Put a towel over the wheel/tire then a 2' x 2' piece of 1/2" or 3/4" plywood on top.
If the jack/jack stand does fail, the frame as it falls could crush/damage/blemish the wheel rim edges even with an inflated tire.
The plywood distributes the load and the towel acts as an abrasion prevention.
Maybe I'm overly careful.
