Maybe! To early to tell yet, but it sure was an interesting day. A friend of
mine and myself drove down to Wainae in the Cobra to see a guy about some FE
parts. Here's how it went down:
The older gentelman has a BIG old house on an old road a way back in the
sticks. He spotted the Cobra as we drove up and was duely impressed.
Welcoming us into the yard he said, "Follow me". We had to step deftly over
and around heaps and piles of stuff along the twisting narrow path that led
along side the house, into some kind of overhanging roughly built roof, on to
the backyard under yet another overhang of some kind. Along the way a certain
pattern began to emerge. The bicycle section, the plants section, the pipe
and metal area, the tire rack (more than one area in that department), the
engine parts section, the boat parts? section. Plenty of 'not sure what the
heck those are' sections... But, I was starting to see a bit of a pattern to
the madness.
WAY in the back past a couple of cars covered with tarps we came to the FE
engine parts section. Nice! He asked me to move a two barrel cast iron FE
intake out of the way and it was all I could do to lift it (I think it was a
refugee from the 'boat anchor' section). Under that, in a plastic container
(long ago squashed flat by the intake) were the very clean, with new gaskets
in place, valve covers I had come to buy. Blue, of course, paid 10 bucks
(there for a mock up project).
The gentelman turned out to be a helluva a gear head. We had an excellent
chat about the old days and his own personal 'Mustang madness'. It wasn't
long before he came up with a few pictures of car's he had owned along the
way, 'Stangs of course! I was a little mesmerized by the sheer number of
"parts" on home built shelves he had. Really, it was just to much to take in.
On the way back I stopped at the tail end of what I thought must be a car
covered with a tarp. I asked if I could take a peek and he pulled the tarp
back 'just enough' where I could make out what it was. A '69 Stang Fastback!
Looks like it's in great shape too, missing motor and trans. A project car
that never got finished. Looking toward the front of that car and further
into the back yard area I spotted another early Stang as well, 66-67 maybe.
Then another one, and another one! Whoa, a 'Stang burial ground right here on
Island! As I began to take it in I saw various Mustang parts on the shelving
that we had walked right past. Grills, emblems, nose cones, etc. Well dang,
the place is loaded! He was VERY low key about the whole thing, while I was
left standing there with drool on my chin and visions of a restoration project
floating in my head...
When I finish my valve cover project I plan to take the 390 OEM covers back to
him and just give them to him. Thanks for the "loan" and keep the 10 bucks
sort of thing. I'll call him first and see if he will let me bring my camera.
I'd love to do a mini photo shoot of the place, including the cars of course!
I think it would make a great story for our local "Aloha Mustang and Shelby
Club". I will gaurentee his privacy and make sure no pictures get out that
could identify the location.
After the Wainae trip and being such a beautiful day we decided to drive
around the island (you know, the LONG way home). My friend told me about this
place on the windward side that would make for a good background picture of
the Cobra. Wow, very nice view, excellent backdrop! I'll go back with my BIG
camera and do a photo shoot there sometime in the future. Check out this low
grade camera phone pic until then.
Yes, I KNOW the quick jacks are on backwards! I have to get some shorter spacers so they don't stick out so far and quit busting my darn legs up. I'm working on it...
