What a legend! Fewer and fewer of those Cobra heroes left now, most unfortunately.
Here's 'cheers!' to Dan. Long may he and his achievements be remembered!

RIP, Mr. President, I met him once when he came to Pacific Raceway's (1967 Trans-Am) A awe struck 12yo kid, got to shake his hand. My father's 62 Volvo P-1800 had a Gurney for President sticker on it. You will be missed.

It is sad to see such an extraordinary man pass. The Man and his contributions have long been the stuff of legend. What a unique example of how to be both competitive and a gentleman.

RIP Dan. Jimmy Clark's dad once said that Dan was the only driver Jimmy feared.

Met him a few years back at Laguna Seca. Was very kind and patient with all of the autograph seekers (me included). His legendary status hadn't gone to his head.
RIP

I saw and remembered this verse today as I was reading the Autoweek eulogy for Dan. It is a part of an A.E. Houseman poem that a now deceased Autoweek Journalist and lifelong friend of Dan Gurney, Denise McCluggage, used when she wrote her book about those special men from his generation, like Dan Gurney. The very same men who so astounded us with their on track and life performances and have now passed on.
With rue my heart is laden
For golden friends I had
For many a rose-lipped maiden
And many a lightfoot lad
By brooks too broad for leaping
The lightfoot boys are laid
The rose-lipped girls are sleeping
In fields where roses fade
The man still amazes me ...

Another sad day in Motorsport history.
Not many had their name on racing parts, like the Gurney flap.
A man of many talents, will be missed.
RIP Dan.

I had the great luck of having some interactions with DSG over the years, my first at Indy qualifying in 1969 and the last in April of 2017 just before his family presented him with a Shelby 289 "Dan Gurney" replica. I had the great honor of being involved with the development of the Gurney replica via Ross Henry, who is the driving force behind the Superformance and Shelby 289 cars. Two interactions 48 years apart...gee, 48, that number seems familiar!
Dan sent me a very nice thank you photo in addition to resigning a photo he signed in 1969 that I took of him at the 1968 Watkins Glen US Grand Prix. I also received a very nice communication from Evi, just more proof of what class people Dan and his family are.
This is Ross meeting with Dan last April just before he was presented with his 289. That famous smile is very evident. And under that towel is Dan's revolutionary engine project.
Sir, you will be missed............

Even as a little boy growing up on a tiny Caribbean island in the 60's, I was familiar with Dan Gurney's name from reading my Dad's Science & Mechanics and Popular Science magazines, along with any other automotive-related literature I could get my hands on. A true icon to any lover of motorsports, and the end of a glorious era.
R.I.P and Godspeed Dan!
