Phoenix-Tucson Challenge Results
Another great Cobra Trip arranged and led by Rick and Kelli Riley from Tucson.
Friday evening BBQ at Rick & Kelli’s home including Giant Shrimp Cocktails provided by our newest members Al & Patty Weaver. Rick’s Beans were as good as his Brats. We spent a long time discussing his CCX build progress in his garage. Long way to go but will be a gem when finished.
Saturday am meet to kick off the run had 7 cobras from the Phoenix area and 3 from the Tucson area. So we win again. I thought that having a run in Tucson would bring out a closer count. Went to the lost Franklin Auto Museum but we found it. Very interesting. Aluminum bodies with air cooled motors way back in 1920s and 1930s.
Next we were off to lunch then Tubac for artsy-crafty shopping. Didn’t last long there for us tough guys. Instead we got an early start to alcohol and rock n roll lead by non other than Scotty at our resort in Rio Rico. 12 of 19 went to dinner near Tubac and the rest of us kept the bar seats warm. After everyone returned to the Resort we met out at a fireplace where Smokey Bear Scotty lit it up real good. We drank and laughed endlessly speared on by Al, Gary, Dan, Rick, Ralphie etc. All bad boys. We invented the saying “What happens in Rio Rico stays in Rio Rico.”
Next morning 9am departure, fuel stop then to a very interesting car collection in Sonoita. 3 open wheel race cars with great histories and Larry’s Cunningham. Great stories and we got buzzed by some feller in a plane. Next was a very long lunch in Sonoita and off to Karchner Caverns. Had to pass through Border Patrol station. We told them Ralphie was legal. Made it to the Caverns JUST in time. My fault telling everyone it might be cool inside. No, it felt like New Orleans after rain in July. Final stop was the DQ in Vail where Al & Patty picked up our ice cream so neither John nor I had to shell out a lot of $2 bills. The Weavers live in Vail.
