paint cost

I am considering a repaint on my Cobra. Will do some mods like rolled edges and maybe even bulge the rear body and fit a little tighter. Door jams etc. I am thinking the cost of paint, primer , tape and paper to be in the 2K to 3K range. Guardsman blue and white stripe with clear coat. Am I being realistic?

Gary, I'm sure you can get.it done for that, but I'm not sure you would be happy with it. My paint job, were it bought separately, would have been closer to $5k than $2k.

If you are doing the work yourself, including paint, then yes 2-3K in materials start to finish is about right.

YeS, I would be doing the work myself. I will be waiting until the fall because do not want to shoot in 105 temp. Done that and chasing because of temp. Which brand of paint would you recommend Mr. Mustang? A driver not a garage queen.

Paint products are a personal choice, personally, buy local sourced, do not buy everything at once, as you will need certain reducers and hardeners mixed for the conditions you are shooting in (IE: mixed that day based on temp and humidity conditions). I like PPG, Dupont, and Sherwin Williams automotive paints.....Before you let anyone tell you differently, there are two major manufacturers of the raw materials these days, and they then market under many different brand and off brand names. Just keep that in mind when someone tells you this product sucks and they only use that product. Why, they might be surprised to know they are both from the same manufacturing plant....Just saying.....

Thxs Bill. I will stay with U.S. made products. I do not plan on taking the 21 year old paint job down to fiberglass. Hi quality primer to avoid any problems. Am I correct in doing it this way Bill. By the way Gregg, Vicki says you follow directions well.

Sherwin Williams is a great, well known brand; however- echoing MrMustang's comment about companies using the same suppliers behind the scenes,
you pay for a name.

Most of what Space Age Paints sells is off-brand versions of the exact same formulas that Sherwin Williams sticks their name on...

So, if cost is a key factor, then +1 more vote for Space Age.

PPG is also great, based on personal experience- I used PPG DP epoxy, K36 surfacing primer, and their base/clear systems on 2 cars in the late 90's/early 2000's.

I'm going to correct you here, Sherwin Williams is one of the major paint manufacturers I spoke of in the earlier post...They own their plants and supply base/raw products to more than 60% of the other automotive paint manufacturers currently sold on the US/Canadian market. That and Dupont and PPG (which share base products with each other across all lines) which take up another 30% of the market in base/raw products available in same market. Branding is just a name these days boys and girls, every paint manufacturer above buys products in one way shape or form from one another. All three of them, so keep that in mind. As for product lines themselves within those brand names, there are lower level, mid level, and top level product lines for all of them. Choose your products wisely, and make certain if you cross paint lines, that the products are compatible.

Also, and more important than anything else I've written on this subject so far....Remember, these products, in liquid or gaseous form can kill you if absorbed into the skin, or inhaled into your lungs...Both by the lack of proper safety equipment........So if you expect to buy your safety equipment at Home Depo or Lowes, forget it, as none of the items they sell are rated for automotive paint products........
