Need Help for new Cobra Club Member
I need some help here. My son, Trent, has purchased a used, consigned BDR Cobra from a dealer in Connecticut . Built in 2012, it is being updated with new dash and gauges and will be delivered soon to AZ. Trent lives about a mile from me in Peoria, AZ. It is titled as a 2012 constructed vehicle in CT.
We have all seen similar questions about a re-title as a 1965 SPCON, which is what we want. We have read the subject in threads such as these and they are helpful, written by knowledgeable, experienced owners, but still confusing.
I went to a third party DMV office and they were firm in title transfer ONLY as current title from anywhere.
AZ. Registration
New Cobra Title & Registration in Arizona
Can the titled year be changed in AZ?
After reading every entry, I’m still confused.
1. Can he drive the car to the DMV upon arrival or does he need a DMV pass?
2. Which DMV should he take it to? We understand it must be inspected. It seems the DMV and inspector is a gamble.
3. Which Level inspection does he need? Is appointment needed?
4. I assume he doesn’t need to pay tax since the title shows a private seller.
5. Does a show of Classic Car Insurance help?
6. Perhaps we need not worry about the year, Cats, emissions, inspection?
Thanks for your input
AZ Bob

Hello Bob... I am going through the same, I recently went through it with a FFR 33 Hotrod and now with a FFR Roadster titles as 2013. (Going to be doing this inspection next month)
I talked with one of the inspection officers Friday who gave me the low down in full on level 2 inspection, title transfer and emissions.
First he said it really helps if the title and vehicle have the same VIN #... this was important for an easy inspection.
I currently have Hagerty classic car limited yearly miles insurance which exempts the car from emissions.
He also said to request the vehicle be changed to a 1965 and this actually helps with DMV as the description (if ever called in) makes more sense if it looks like what it's titled as... in this case also exempt from emissions.
This inspector (Mr. Edwards) was from the Phoenix location and said he was a " car guy" and would change the year.
I have also heard the Glendale location is very "Factory Five" kit car friendly and I've talked with that inspector in the past (Mark) and he helped me keep my 33 Hotrod titled as a 33.
You can get the temporary tags to move the vehicle but if the car is not a 17 digit Vin the website will not recognize it so you will have to go in in person.
Also keep in mind they are all about 4-6 weeks out and you can only get an appointment on line no exceptions, there is a process to check nightly to see if any next day appointments have been canceled.
Feel free to respond if more info is needed and I will give you mu number... my name is Bob as well.

Thank you Bob for all your help. I haven't had to register a cobra in AZ for 22 years. I will copy your reply to Trent and offer my assistance. He does own a home in Munds Park which he could use for registration if that would help. We will see. My guess is his cobra arrival is still 30+ days away. Having many upgrades installed.

Thanks for the help Dad and Bob. I will report back. I have a few options here. My company ACERTUSdelivers.com handles vehicle transportation and title and registration in all 50 states. I will start there and see where I am directed. I suspect following the steps above will prove results but my backup is to register at my place in munds park (Flagstaff) to circumvent the emissions issues... The car is back east getting some "updates" so there's not much i can do until we deliver it. I have made a level 2 inspection apt just in case.

Best of luck gentlemen and don't think your gonna have a problem either way... no matter how it's currently titled.
I have spoken with DMV level 2 inspectors and you will probably have to have that done either way being an out of state vehicle.
Hagerty will provide you with the "classic car insurance" document you will need so emissions will not be required.
Good luck and enjoy.

Finishing the Story
I received the car on Tuesday and parked it in Trent's garage. Trent was out of town. He had his appointment with the DMV near 59th Ave and Bell this morning (4-6 week wait) and simply took the chance and drove it there with no plate or permit.
All went smooth and well. By request, his cobra is now titled in AZ as a 1965 Cobra Spec const and his total cost for 5 years of registration was $70. Big success at DMV, drew lots of employees to look. Had good time but still took 2+ hours. Next will be vanity plates ($125) for 5 years. Can now drive on street with permit until assigned plates arrive.
All that worrying for nothing.
Thanks for all the help
AZ Bob

Don't know Karl. I gave him a list of 50 I came up with but it IS his car, so we will see.
Most came from here: Cool Cobra tags
