Fun Run 2023 Summary
Our West Side group gathered right on time at our Old Carefree Hwy and Lake Pleasant Pkwy location with 5 Cobras and 4 Mustangs.
First Pit Stop was the Shell Station in Congress on Rte 89, then the famous Safeway parking lot in Chino Valley where the later starting group of 5 cobras met up with us plus Ralph from Cottonwood. I think everyone topped off our tanks and as usual we drew a crowd and shared cookies from Jim and Scott. We even added a mini van with Vicki and their grandson. A new member, Sean, with a beautiful Backdraft drove with us all the way to Chino Valley then left us for spirited driving up 89A to Jerome.
Onward to Seligman for lunches at either Snow Cap or Lilo’s, and to pickup our show entry packages.
Most of us took Route 66 west to Peach Springs, then Hackberry and ultimately to the Red Roof Inn Kingman.
Check in, unpacking, naps, showers, and parking lot street racing. Guess what? There was alcohol, cigars, jokes, and swearing! May goodness! Beautiful weather, no one had car trouble, we all got rooms with our prearranged discounts.
Dinner at Dam Bar or Arby’s, more parking lot banter then, early to bed for most of us.
Saturday morning breakfast at Grandpa’s Kitchen or elsewhere, then many directions. Many parked together in front of Mr Dz’s restaurant in a great spot. No one drove back to Seligman, some visited Laughlin and Oatman.
We had 9 cobras lined up on Andy Devine. What a sight!
Turns out our own Juan Toledo won a Trophy in the Roadster Class. Way to go Juan!
THEN THE BEST TIME OF THE WEEKEND: Saturday afternoon parking lot! Entertainment provided by Scott Siggins who demonstrated his less than mastery of the Moon Walk and Break Dancing among other devious maneuvers.
Dinner was split between a Mexican Restaurant and Pizza Hut.
Our group of 10 at Pizza Hut was again regaled by Scott Siggins who, with Mark Schwarz’s help ordered like 10 large pizzas for the table and beer for all, then Scott picked up the HUGE tab for everyone. Thank you again Scott. Most of us took boxes of pizza home with us.
Back to the parking lot for a while but most of us headed for our rooms 9pm-ish.
I was sleeping by 10pm but Jim Cook didn’t wonder in until I let him in the room at 1am loaded. I heard him fall twice in the shower and didn’t have the heart or the ability to wake him Sunday morning. Many members returned to the show to witness Juan’s victory later in the morning.
Bruce Heuling, Bruce Nelson, Mark & Lisa Schwarz, and I headed home via 93 at 7am. 3 cars went to the Horseshoe Cafe but I was home shortly after 10am. Those that didn’t join Juan headed via the coined “Salmon Run” back to Lilo’s in Seligman for breakfast then home. That makes 20 years in a row on the Fun Fun for me.
Attendees included Juan, Bruce, Bruce, Bruce, Gary & Vicki, Paul & Marie, Jim & Jan, Jim & wife, Sean & wife, Ralph, Dan, Scott, Al, and if I missed any names, I’m sorry.
Great trip, great weather, no breakdowns, no tickets. Good group even without Karl. We’ll see him this Saturday at the Saguaro Lake Cobra Picnic.
Photos to come

It was a great run, but unfortunately, Juan is a bit premature when discussing breakdowns. Seems one of our kindred, who drives a white cobra, had a shock break and some of us spent a while beside old 66 just short of Hackberry trying to fix it. Seems he got it jury rigged and made it home OK. Congratulations to the young gentleman for his creativity and out of the box thinking.
